Free document shredding April 18 in Manhattan

A free “Shred Day” is being offered by Document Resources Inc. 9-11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at 414 South 5th St. in Manhattan, so people can bring their personal paper documents from home and have them shredded at no charge. This is a great opportunity to do some spring cleaning and safely get rid of obsolete documents with sensitive information, such as:

  • Bank statements and canceled/duplicate checks
  • Credit-card statements and receipts
  • Medical records
  • Paycheck stubs
  • Investment records and statements
  • Tax returns and associated documents (e.g., old W-2 statements)
  • Insurance statements and policies
  • Home financial information (mortgage statements, deeds, etc.)
  • Anything else you want to keep private, like some photos and of course, anything with your SSN

To safeguard your personal information from identity theft and financial fraud, these types of documents should never be recycled or placed in the trash without first shredding them, since criminals sift through trash looking for anything with personal or account information.

Be sure you retain documents an appropriate length of time for tax or legal purposes.

Note that only household and personal materials will be accepted, and you do not have to remove staples or paper clips.
