Trend Micro site license renewed for three years

Based on feedback from the campus and SIRT, K-State’s site license for Trend Micro OfficeScan security software was renewed for another three years. The license, which now expires March 31, 2012, covers computers both in the office and at home for all K-State faculty, staff, and current students. The Silver Premium Support contract was renewed for one year and will be re-evaluated each year.

OfficeScan provides K-State with a suite of security functions for desktops and servers that includes antivirus, antispyware, a firewall, intrusion detection, and blocking access to known, malicious websites (“Web Reputation Services“).

Trend Micro meeting moved to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18

The campus meeting about renewing the Trend Micro license postponed from last Friday is scheduled 9:30-10:30 a.m.  Wednesday, Feb. 18, in Union 213.  Since K-State’s license for Trend Micro antivirus software expires March 31, Harvard Townsend, chief information security officer, will facilitate a discussion of the options for renewing the license (which boil down to whether we renew for one year or three years), how a decision will be made, and considerations for Macintosh support.

K-State’s Symantec license for Macs expires in October 2009, and Trend Micro is about to release a native Mac antivirus product. Continue reading “Trend Micro meeting moved to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18”

Trend Micro Web Reputation Services enabled to help battle malware infections

To assist in the battle against malware that daily threatens K-State computers, Web Reputation Services (WRS), also known as “Web Threat Protection Services”, was enabled last week in K-State’s Trend Micro OfficeScan for those managed by the central IT Trend Micro server. WRS augments the antivirus and antispyware protection already offered in OfficeScan to add another layer of prevention against the rapidly evolving, increasingly sophisticated, quickly spreading, and growing number of malicious threats faced by K-Staters as they browse the Internet.

Web Reputation Services works by checking every web address you attempt to visit in a web browser and blocking access to those found in a list of known malicious sites. WRS works with all major web browsers, including Internet Explorer and Firefox.

Trend Micro license-renewal meeting Wednesday, Feb. 18

Update: Last-minute date change from Friday, Feb. 13, to Wednesday, Feb. 18

K-State’s license for Trend Micro antivirus/security software expires March 31, so we are in the process of exploring renewal options. It is not an option to switch to a different antivirus vendor at this point, given the complexity and magnitude of converting. However, K-State does have the option of renewing for either one year or three years, and Trend Micro is offering attractive pricing for a three-year renewal.

A campus meeting to discuss the renewal options is scheduled 1:30-2:30 p.m. 9:30-10:30 a.m.Friday, Feb. 13 Tuesday, Feb. 17 Wednesday, Feb. 18, in Union 213. Continue reading “Trend Micro license-renewal meeting Wednesday, Feb. 18”

Five things you should know about IT security at K-State

With the return of tens of thousands of students and arrival of thousands of new students, faculty, and staff, everyone needs to be reminded of the importance of protecting K-State’s information and technology resources. Here are five things about IT security that individuals need to be aware of as the semester begins:

  1. Never give your password to anyone in an e-mail message. Numerous different scam e-mails have been sent to K-Staters over the last eight months trying to trick people into replying with their eID password.  K-State IT support staff will never ask for your password in an e-mail, nor will any legitimate business or organization. If you get such an e-mail, just delete it.

Operation PC Aug. 21-24 for residence halls

From Aug. 21-24, K-State IT staff will be working with the 5,300 students moving into the residence halls and Jardine Apartments, to prepare their computers for accessing the network. Students must:

  • Update their computers with the latest operating system patches
  • Install the managed version of K-State’s antivirus software
  • Set an appropriate administrator password
  • Verify their computer’s operating system license
  • Install necessary operating system updates
  • Install the Kansas State University antivirus solution
  • Install the Client Security Agent (CSA)
  • Verify their successful registration to the campus network

Once these steps are completed, students register their computer to sign on to the campus network. To date, more than 1,600 students moving into the residence halls have completed the process remotely, which is available from www.k-state.edu/infotech/networks/access.

Don’t fall for “Antivirus 2008 XP” rogue software!

In the last week, four computers in one K-State department were compromised and used to send massive amounts of spam to recipients all over the world. Likewise, I was contacted by a K-State employee who had warning messages pop up repeatedly on her home computer telling her the computer was infected and she needed to purchase special software to fix it. The common denominator in all five cases is rogue anti-spyware software called “Antivirus 2008 XP” (aka “Antivirus XP 2008”) that’s making the rounds on the Internet.
