Q/A: Computers and IT in the residence halls

Parents have been asking a lot of computer-related questions pertaining to the residence halls during this month’s New Student Orientation and Enrollment at K-State. Below are frequent questions and answers. For more information, see the ResNet FAQs on Housing and Dining Services’ website.

Q. Are there printers in the residence halls?
A. Yes, at least one on the main floor of each hall. Contact the front desk of each residence hall for more information.

Q. Can students in the residence halls hook up their gaming devices to the Internet?
A. Yes, devices such as XBox, Wii, PS3, etc. can be connected to the Internet as long as each device is registered for network access through Housing and Dining Services’ procedures. Note that gaming devices must be hooked up on the “wired” network only, not the wireless network.

Q. If my student has the Trend Micro antivirus that’s auto-updated in the residence halls, and they bring their computer home over breaks or for the summer, does it continue to auto-update?
A. Yes, it will, said Harvard Townsend, K-State’s chief information security officer.

Residence-hall registration numbers: Computers, gaming devices, handhelds

At the beginning of Fall 2009, K-Staters in the residence halls and Jardine Apartments registered their personal computers, gaming devices, or wireless handheld devices to the K-State wired and wireless networks. The registration process allows residents to verify that their operating system is valid and that the K-State antivirus software is up-to-date with the latest security updates and patches. Overall, this registration helps to secure the residence-hall network against mass virus outbreaks and other security threats that directly impact academic and social computing.

The registration numbers based on specific computer platforms are as follows: Continue reading “Residence-hall registration numbers: Computers, gaming devices, handhelds”

Residential networking begins first week-long “move-in week”

On Aug. 1, K-State Housing and Dining Services and Information Technology Services staff began working with the 5,300 students who will be moving into the residence halls and Jardine Apartments. International students are moving into the residence halls this week, with the biggest influx arriving Thursday, Aug. 13.

New this year is a full, week-long “move-in week” for residence hall students, with 687 students scheduled to enter the residence halls Sunday, Aug. 16, and the rest trickling in throughout the week. Saturday, Aug. 20, is the preferred move-in day, with 885 students already signed up for that day.

Network security registration required for Residential Network

K-Staters in the residence halls and Jardine Apartments who are bringing a computer, gaming device, or wireless handheld device to K-State are required to complete K-State’s network-access process before their computing device will be permitted on the network. This includes access to both Ethernet and wireless connections. The Bradford system has been reset for this semester; all new and returning residents must complete the process, even if they registered in the fall. The re-registration process allows residents the chance to check and make sure that their operating system and antivirus software is up-to-date since leaving last December.
