K-State Libraries has technology carts, self-checkout, overhead scanners

Fall 2008 brings new and exciting technology to Hale Library! Three new technology carts are being installed so K-Staters can collaborate on projects and presentations. Two new self-checkout stations prevent waiting in line. Three overhead scanners installed last year allow books and other materials to be scanned into digital files that are e-mailed or saved to flash drives.

Collaborative technology carts. The first of three collaborative technology carts has been installed. The carts, supported by K-State Libraries and the Information Technology Assistance Center, assist with working on group projects via a 37-inch LCD display, an audio splitter, and connections for PC or Mac computers. Students and faculty can use the cart for any collaborative purpose including research, projects, and presentations.  You’ll find the cart in the group study area on the second floor of Hale.

New self-checkout stations. K-State Libraries also introduces two new 3M Self-Check Stations in Hale Library. Located on the second floor near the Circulation Desk, the two stations provide quick and easy access to check out library materials without waiting in line, or when the Circulation desk is closed but Hale is open. To use the self-check stations, just swipe your K-State ID and follow the on-screen instructions.  The materials will be checked out to you and desensitized to pass through the entrance security system.

Overhead scanners. The self-check machines and collaborative technology carts join overhead scanners which were first introduced in March 2007. Three scanners in Hale Library allow users to scan books, journals, newspapers, maps, or any other library materials into digital files which can be e-mailed or saved to a flash drive. The scanners, like all technology in K-State Libraries, are free to use, and they save paper to boot.

Assistance with any of the technologies mentioned is available from the Library Help Desk in Hale Library. For more information, contact 785-532-7421 or genref@k-state.edu.
