Visio 2007: Hypervisual interfaces

Microsoft Visio 2007 (Standard) enhances users’ abilities to create visuals of various systems (objects and interrelationships) and processes. This latest Visio version offers a more visual interface.

The template categories have been simplified: Business, Engineering, Flowchart, General, Maps and Floor Plans, Network, Schedule, and Software and Database.

Recent Visio documents appear as thumbnail previews in the right column and link to the actual files on the computer (unless they’ve been moved).

Recently used templates appear in the central area of the workspace.

When a user clicks on a particular template type in the left column, the central workspace fills with images of the types of diagrams listed. For example, under Maps and Floor Plans, users can see a sample of the diagram types with their corresponding names listed below. The highlighted template type is magnified to the far right.

Engineering templates are very popular, particularly since CAD drawings and photos and other image types may be pulled into Visio for diagram creation.

Software and Database templates offer a range of file types, with special tools that may be used for each, in terms of objects, connectors, and text.
