Two new IT security policies published

Two new IT security policies that K-Staters need to be aware of were published recently in K-State’s Policy and Procedures Manual (PPM):

The purpose of these new policies is to help the University better protect its information and technology resources.
The IT Security Incident Reporting and Response Policy requires K-Staters to report suspected information and technology security incidents promptly so they can be handled quickly and effectively. The policy provides guidance to the campus community on how and when to report such incidents and appropriate incident response.  Detailed incident handling procedures accompany the policy.

The Physical and Environmental Security Policy addresses the oft-overlooked risks that physical and environmental threats pose to information and technology assets. An incident on campus this past winter where a faculty laptop computer was stolen out of a lab when the door was left unlocked is an example of the type of threat addressed by this policy.

Since these policies apply to all K-Staters, everyone should review and understand them.  If you have questions, please contact Harvard Townsend at harv@k-state.edu. For more information on IT security at K-State, please see the www.k-state.edu/infotech/security.
