Departments: Switching to a Mac? Things to consider

Thinking about switching to a Mac for your main computer? Here are some things to keep in mind in order to make the switch a smooth one.

  1. Make note of all the applications you use in Windows and ensure there are equivalent versions for Mac OS X. For example, there are no current versions of AutoCAD that run on Mac OS X. And K-State’s HyperSnap license only runs on Windows. Some university systems might not be available using a Mac operating system.
  2. Check with your IT department to make sure they can support Mac OS X. Some units may have standardized on a Windows environment and not allow Macs.
  3. Any recently released Apple computer can run Windows, but make sure you have an incentive to do so. While there are applications that allow you to run Windows in Mac OS X, they aren’t always the most reliable if they require lots of memory or video processing power.  Boot Camp is available, but switching back and forth between operating systems is tedious and wastes time.
  4. Test drive a Mac before you purchase to ensure you are comfortable with the navigation and common tools that you would have used on a Windows system.

When in doubt, discuss the purchase with the information technology support staff in your unit or contact the IT Help Desk. With these issues addressed and if you are still interested in a Mac, your switch can be a smoother transition.
