October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month and, as part of the celebration, K-State’s IT security team is hosting a series of events that will help the users at K-State become more secure. One of those events is the Free Cybersecurity Training Event 8 a.m.-noon Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the K-State Student Union.

The event will consist of a welcome and introductory remarks from K-State’s new Chief Information Officer, Ken Stafford, followed by two groups of breakout sessions. The morning will wrap up with a Security Round-Robin, which will be your chance to ask the security experts the questions you have about IT security at K-State.

In the first breakout session, you can choose from:

  1. “Risks of Social Networking” will be presented by Harvard Townsend, chief information security officer, about the dangers and risks that are posed by putting your information on the Internet using sites like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter.
  2. “Useful and Free Security Tools” will be presented by Josh McCune, network security analyst, who will discuss free security tools that you can use at work or at home to keep your computer clean of viruses, adware, and spyware.
  3. “Mobile Device Security” will be presented by Thomas Kuhn, microcomputer support technician. This presentation returns by popular demand to give you tips and tricks on securing mobile computing devices that are smaller than a breadbox.

In the second breakout session, you can choose from:

  1. “Basic E-mail and Web Security” will be presented by Harvard Townsend and will teach you several ways to keep your web browser and your e-mail more secure.
  2. “Secure IT @ K-State” will be presented by Neil Sindicich, cybersecurity analyst. This is an in-person version of the soon-to-be-released mandatory online training for K-State faculty/staff. People who choose to attend this section will have separate attendance collected so that the training will be added to their personnel file.
  3. “Printer, Copier, Scanner Security (oh my!)” will be presented by Anthony Phillips, computer security analyst, who will tell about the kind of security settings you should have enabled on your Savin device and how to use those settings most effectively.
