Free tool: IrfanView (for images, graphics, multimedia)

What it is: “IrfanView is a fast and compact image viewer/converter. It is trying to be simple for beginners and powerful for professionals.” —Irfan Skiljen, developer

What it does: “…can view, edit, and convert image files and play video/audio files. It is noted for its small size, speed, ease of use, and ability to handle a wide variety of graphic file formats, and has some image creation and painting capabilities.” (from Wikipedia.org’s IrfanView page)

Advantages and high points

  1. Free for private, non-commercial use (at home);  educational use (schools, universities, and libraries); and “charity and humanitarian organisations”
  2. Similar to HyperSnap, but with more variety of tools (crop, paint, screen-capture, editing, icons, but also slideshow, multimedia player, email, and more)
  3. Supports a wide variety of file formats
  4. Highly rated by CNET (4 out of 5 stars): “This image viewer and editor is a longtime favorite among our staff, and with good reason. IrfanView is simple, fast, and free for individual use.”

Price: Free (freeware, shareware) for non-commercial use
