Technology outage result of network traffic

By Information Technology Services

At 4:34 a.m. Friday, K-State began experiencing intermittent problems connecting to various systems in the data center. Information Technology Services staff along with our vendor partner, Cisco, began investigating immediately. While most K-Staters continued to have email access, other systems such as K-State Online Classic and Canvas, the K-State Web pages and some administrative systems were unavailable.

It was determined that very heavy network traffic from a foreign country clogged the firewalls. Information Technology Services is continuing to investigate the outage. Systems were returned to service around noon Friday.

In another issue, email for some K-Staters using clients such as Apple Mail and Outlook were unable to connect. This was a separate issue with the authentication system K-State uses to reach Office 365 mail. As systems returned from the original outage on Friday, the email authentication system experienced an error, resulting in some users who were unable to reach email using their client. Webmail was available through the duration of the outage.

ITS staff worked through Friday night to troubleshoot the remaining issues. All systems were restored by 3 p.m. Saturday.
