Residence-hall registration numbers: Computers, gaming devices, handhelds

At the beginning of Fall 2009, K-Staters in the residence halls and Jardine Apartments registered their personal computers, gaming devices, or wireless handheld devices to the K-State wired and wireless networks. The registration process allows residents to verify that their operating system is valid and that the K-State antivirus software is up-to-date with the latest security updates and patches. Overall, this registration helps to secure the residence-hall network against mass virus outbreaks and other security threats that directly impact academic and social computing.

The registration numbers based on specific computer platforms are as follows: Continue reading “Residence-hall registration numbers: Computers, gaming devices, handhelds”

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard available at Union Computer Store

On Friday, Aug. 28, Apple released Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard for all Intel-based Macs. Snow Leopard is available for $29 at the Union Computer Store or via their online store. If you purchased a qualifying Mac on or after June 8 that does not include Mac OS X Snow Leopard, you can upgrade for $9.95 through Apple’s Snow Leopard Up-to-Date Program.

This is an incremental upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard rather than a release of a new operating system. Hence the “Snow” added to Leopard rather than a new big cat name. According to Apple, Snow Leopard is “Refined, not reinvented”. Some of the features of Snow Leopard include: Continue reading “Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard available at Union Computer Store”

Update on Mac antivirus protection at K-State

For many years, K-State has provided antivirus protection for Mac users with  Symantec Antivirus (SAV) for Macs corporate edition (SAV). The bad news is that our license for SAV expires Oct. 27, and given the current budget challenges, there are no funds to renew. The good news is that Trend Micro now has a Mac antivirus client that is included in our site license, so it is already paid for with full support until March 2012 for all faculty, staff, and student office and home Mac computers.

SIRT, K-State’s Security Incident Response Team, is in the process of testing a beta release of a Trend Micro Security for Mac (TMSM) version 1.5. In fact, engineers from Trend Micro are on campus this week (July 27-28) to help install, configure, and test TMSM on servers and Mac computers around campus.  Unlike SAV, TMSM is a manageable product and includes more security features, such as support for Web Reputation Services. “Very cheap Macbook” is an offer too good to be true

The problem

Over the last several weeks, an e-mail has been received by K-Staters telling recipients that if they contact the sender, they will receive a “very cheap” Macbook. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s a scam.

Take a look at the e-mail and note some of the factors that should alert you to these kinds of scams. Continue reading ““Very cheap Macbook” is an offer too good to be true”

Amazon Kindle books now available in iPhone, iPod touch

Last week Amazon released a free Kindle application for the iPhone and iPod touch through the Apple App Store. This application allows you to read Kindle books on your iPhone or iPod touch. Currently you can read books purchased through your Kindle or directly from the Amazon Kindle web store.

The app does not yet allow for the direct purchase of books. To buy books from the iPhone and iPod touch, you will need to go to the Amazon Kindle store website using the Safari browser on an iPhone or iPod touch.

Create your own PDF files

Have you ever wanted to make your own PDF files? The process has become increasingly simple over the last few years and now there are several free options out there for both PCs and Macs. Think of these solutions as PDF printers but instead of producing a sheet of paper with your document, a file will be saved instead.

While these solutions will create PDF files, they will not create fillable PDF forms. To produce a fillable PDF form, you will need to purchase a solution like Adobe Acrobat Standard or Pro (see Adobe’s Product comparison webpage).

Trend Micro site license renewed for three years

Based on feedback from the campus and SIRT, K-State’s site license for Trend Micro OfficeScan security software was renewed for another three years. The license, which now expires March 31, 2012, covers computers both in the office and at home for all K-State faculty, staff, and current students. The Silver Premium Support contract was renewed for one year and will be re-evaluated each year.

OfficeScan provides K-State with a suite of security functions for desktops and servers that includes antivirus, antispyware, a firewall, intrusion detection, and blocking access to known, malicious websites (“Web Reputation Services“).
