Closed Captions benefit all K-State students

Closed Captions are beneficial for hearing-impaired students, but did you know that Closed Captions are beneficial for all students? More than 80% of students who utilize closed captioning do not have a hearing disability.*

Students use closed captioning for many reasons including:

  • Improved focus — Some students prefer to view instructional videos with Closed Captions on to help them focus on the content.
  • Retention and recall — Growing research indicates that watching videos with Closed Captions on, increases students’ scores on assessments.
  • Poor audio quality — Closed Captions help when the audio quality is poor and the sound is not loud enough.
  • Second language — Many international students use Closed Captions as a tool to assist in language comprehension and for study review.
  • Speaker clarity — Instructors with thick accents are easier to understand through Closed Captions.
  • Loud and/or quiet environments — When students are in an environment where they cannot turn their speakers on or wear headphones, Closed Captions are a great option.

Instructors who are using Mediasite within K-State Online already have the ability to add Closed Captions to their videos with just a couple of clicks. View the Adding Closed-Captioning guide for step-by-step instructions on uploading your files to Mediasite in K-State Online.

Kansas State University has a contract with third-party vendor Caption Sync who will transcribe your instructional videos for a set fee.

Captions and transcripts should accompany audio and video used to deliver course content to meet the university’s legal requirement to provide equal educational opportunities for all.

Mediasite unavailable during Jan. 8 upgrade

Mediasite, the university’s centrally hosted video and rich content management platform, will undergo a software upgrade 9 a.m. until approximately 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2018. Mediasite will be unavailable during this time.

Once the upgrade is complete, the MyMediasite portal for faculty/staff will sport a new and improved layout featuring:

  • Responsive design, better suited for a growing variety of end-user devices and screen sizes
  • Better visibility of MyMediasite controls and options
  • Enhanced sharing tools
  • Improved search capabilities

The new MyMediasite portal allows you to more easily browse your Mediasite user channels and shared folders. You can select frequently accessed folders to appear in a list of favorites, similar to the way you can star favorite courses in Canvas.

Updated help documentation, video tutorials, and other training opportunities will be available shortly after the new portal debuts. In-person training options will be announced in early January.

Time to update old Mediasite links

As a result of the Mediasite service migration last summer, the domain used to access Mediasite video presentations changed from kansasstate.mediasite.com to mediasite.k-state.edu. For the past year, viewers who used the old domain name were automatically redirected to the new one. After June 14, viewers who attempt to view Mediasite presentations using the old domain will no longer be redirected and will instead receive an error.

If your website contains old links or embeds to Mediasite video presentations, be sure to update your links and embed codes to reflect the current domain.

Mediasite on-campus server migration is complete

During the month of June, Mediasite services and content were migrated from the cloud-hosted provider to on-campus servers as part of the Converged Infrastructure initiative. Faculty and staff who use Mediasite need to perform the post-migration steps to ensure their content and tools are working properly.

The MyMediasite tool has been updated in K-State Online, so instructors can continue to add video to their courses as usual. However, if you have previously downloaded and installed the Mediasite Desktop Recorder, you will need to update the program’s settings to direct the tool to the new on-campus servers.

Webmasters and others responsible for their website’s content should update their Mediasite links and embedded videos as soon as possible. Simply change “kansasstate.mediasite.com” to “mediasite.k-state.edu” in your link or embed code. Links to the old Mediasite system will continue to function for a limited time.

Mediasite June migration

Mediasite services and content will migrate from the current cloud-hosted provider to on-campus servers during the month of June. In the last year alone, Mediasite has experienced a 360 percent growth in presentations, now totaling more than 17 thousand.
