Save time and money with 6 IT resources

  1. IT Help Desk

    Limited, free laser printing is available (in the InfoCommons and university computing labs) to all students and faculty/staff using their K-State eID and password. $10 is allocated per person each fall and spring semester, and $5 each summer. Q/A: Computers and IT in the residence halls

Parents have been asking a lot of computer-related questions pertaining to the residence halls during this month’s New Student Orientation and Enrollment at K-State. Below are frequent questions and answers. For more information, see the ResNet FAQs on Housing and Dining Services’ website.

Q. Are there printers in the residence halls?
A. Yes, at least one on the main floor of each hall. Contact the front desk of each residence hall for more information.

Q. Can students in the residence halls hook up their gaming devices to the Internet?
A. Yes, devices such as XBox, Wii, PS3, etc. can be connected to the Internet as long as each device is registered for network access through Housing and Dining Services’ procedures. Note that gaming devices must be hooked up on the “wired” network only, not the wireless network.

Q. If my student has the Trend Micro antivirus that’s auto-updated in the residence halls, and they bring their computer home over breaks or for the summer, does it continue to auto-update?
A. Yes, it will, said Harvard Townsend, K-State’s chief information security officer.

$5 free printing for summer in labs, InfoCommons

As of Tuesday, May 18, limited free printing has been set at $5 per K-Stater for the summer session. This is available to all students with an active K-State eID and is for printers in the university computing labs and K-State InfoCommons. For more information, see the printing instructions for the color and black-and-white printers in those facilities.

Printing in labs, InfoCommons offline Wednesday morning, May 19

The university printing system that supports the K-State InfoCommons (in Hale Library), the university computing labs, College of Business Administration, Journalism and Mass Communications, and English computing labs will be upgraded on Wednesday, May 19,  starting at 8 a.m. Printing in these locations will be unavailable for up to four hours, with resources returning online as soon as they are upgraded.

During this outage, the IT Help Desk will provide printing; contact them (214 Hale Library, 785-532-7722, helpdesk@k-state.edu) if you need assistance. The Hale Library second-floor printing outage is expected to last 30 minutes or less.

Q/A: Cause of “more than one user” print error in labs/InfoCommons?

After I swipe my card to print on campus, a message pops up saying that my “User ID identifies more than one user on the pharos database”. It won’t let me print anything. What does this error mean, and how can I print?

That error occurs when your ISO number (which is the number associated with your Wildcat ID Card) is incorrectly programmed in the printing system for the K-State InfoCommons and university computing labs. This can happen in various ways — letting someone borrow your card to print, getting a replacement card, or several other reasons.

Contact the IT Help Desk (214 Hale Library, 785-532-7722) to provide information to get your Wildcat ID card working properly with the system.

ID Center phases out “smart chip” technology on Wildcat ID cards

The K-State ID Center and Information Technology Services announces the conversion of the “smart chip” technology to the prepaid Cat Cash system effective Monday, Oct. 5. At the start of every fall and spring semester, $10 in funds is placed on each student’s eID to be used for limited free printing at participating university computing labs ($5 during the summer). Once those funds are exhausted, the student will now use Cat Cash rather than reloading at a “smart chip” station.

“Transferring this service over to Cat Cash has allowed for a significant savings in technology expenses as well as the consolidation to one standard payment system on campus,” said Craig Johnson, assistant director of the K-State Student Union.

InfoCommons, labs printing to require Wildcat card Oct. 5

Starting Oct. 5, students, staff, and faculty wanting to print in the K-State InfoCommons and the university computing labs will be required to swipe their Wildcat ID card for both limited free printing and pay-for-print.

Pay-for-print will be moving away from using the smart chip on the Wildcat ID card and will use the magnetic strip on the back, which is attached to student, staff, and faculty Cat Cash accounts. Continue reading “InfoCommons, labs printing to require Wildcat card Oct. 5” →

$10 limited free B/W, color printing in labs, InfoCommons, MDC

On Aug. 20, limited free printing in the university computing labs and K-State InfoCommons was reset to $10 for the fall semester. This service is available to all students with an active K-State eID, and is available via printers in those facilities as well as the Media Development Center (Hale 213).

Double-sided (duplex) black-and-white printing is the default in the labs and InfoCommons. Duplex printing costs 18 cents, and single pages are 10 cents.

This summer, all computers in the InfoCommons were updated to provide access to color printing, through the color printer in the Media Development Center.
