Starting the School Year with Smurthwaite

Smurthwaite New Members, Fall 2017
Smurthwaite House, Fall 2017

This August marked the start of another school year at K-State, but also the beginning of Retreat Week at Smurthwaite! Retreat week allowed all of the old members to meet and bond with the new members, and it included various activities like icebreaker games, a picture scavenger hunt around campus, and walking class schedules together with big/little pairings (old and new member pairs). This year, we have 30 returning members and 11 new members, and we are also welcoming a new ACDI, Britt. Montgomery, to Smurthwaite!

During the beginning of Retreat Week, before the new members moved in, all of the old members got to initiate our fellow Smurthwaite sister, Maddy. She lived in the house during Fall 2016, but was not able to go to initiation in the spring because of an internship/study opportunity. So, the old members held a special initiation for her!

Retreat Week also included Greek Serenades and alumni dinner. During serenades, all of the women dressed up, and pledges for the fraternities sang, danced, and performed skits for several sororities and houses. After the alumni dinner, where Smurthwaite alumnae make dinner for the current members, all the women of the house took a customary photo on the front porch, as pictured above.

Based off Retreat Week, this year at Smurthwaite is off to a great start! It is always fun to meet the new members and get to know them. We are all looking forward to the many events and programs that will happen and the friendships that will be formed as the semester goes on.

With love,

Your Smurthwaite Sisters
