Today would have been the 2020 Turfgrass Field Day!!!

Did you know that today would have been the K-State Turfgrass Field Day? We wish we could be together at Rocky Ford in Manhattan — presenting research, providing problem diagnosis, networking with our commercial exhibitors, and gazing at the amazing equipment displays!

We do plan to post written and video research updates throughout the remainder of the year on the Turf and Landscape Blog, accessible through our website: https://www.k-state.edu/turf/

Be sure to tune in over the next couple of weeks. We will be highlighting research and providing some awesome visuals of Rocky Ford Research Station in honor of the 2020 Turfgrass Field Day.

Thanks for your continued support! We can’t wait to connect again in-person one day. May the grass be greener on the other side.

2020 Turf and Landscape Field Day Canceled

The turf team looks forward to the field day each year. However, due to the continuing complications from COVID-19, KSU has extended the limit on face-to-face campus gatherings until at least July 31. KSU has a team working with health officials to monitor the ongoing situation and make science-based decisions on when and how to ramp up campus operations.

Field Day was scheduled for August 6, 2020. The field day takes significant time to plan and prepare. With the uncertainty of when campus operations will allow face-to-face gatherings, especially those of the size and scope of Field Day, we’ve made the decision to cancel the 2020 Kansas Turfgrass and Landscape Field Day this year. Thank you for understanding, and we continue to wish good health to you, your co-workers, and your families.

In addition, although turf research is continuing at Rocky Ford, the Olathe Horticulture Center, and the Pair Center, all centers are closed to the public and researchers must minimize their time at the facilities.

We do plan to post written and video research updates through the remainder of the year on the Turf and Landscape Blog, accessible through our website, ksu.edu/turf.  Next year’s Kansas Turfgrass and Landscape Field Day will be at the Rocky Ford Turfgrass Research Center in Manhattan on August 5, 2021.  We are looking forward to seeing you at the 70th Annual Kansas Turfgrass Conference, December 8, 9, and 10, 2020 in Topeka, KS. In the meantime, you can keep in touch with us here on the blog.

The Kansas Turf & Ornamentals Field Day program is designed for all segments of the turf and ornamental industry — lawn care, athletic fields, golf courses, landscape, and grounds maintenance. Included on the program are research presentations, problem diagnosis, commercial exhibits, and equipment displays. There will be time to see current research, talk to the experts, and get answers to your questions. This year it will be a the K-State Research and Extension Center in Olathe on August 1, 2019.

The KTF Turf Field Days are a great way to see and learn about the turfgrass research at K-State first hand. The events are held annually in the summer at the turfgrass research locations of Kansas State University.

The Field Day qualifies for recertification credit hr for commercial pesticide applicators.

Staying Ahead of the Curve

While it’s near impossible to keep up with what crazy athletic sock/shoe combination is popular or what the difference between leggings and jeggings are (don’t ask me), there is a real value in keeping a pulse on what will keep us current or ahead of coming trends, especially in our field.

Quasi-Innovation at work: Soggy toes from dew, no more with rubber gloves

This can be an exhausting endeavor, but may prove to be the very thing you needed to improve your various management strategies, nutrient inputs, or just the way you communicate. Here are a couple suggestions to keep ahead of (or at least keep up with) the curve:

  1. Get on Twitter. K-State Turfgrass, other universities, and companies you rely on are constantly posting information. Twitter makes for a great filter for larger articles as you can skim through the individual tweets to find pertinent information.
  2. Go to local field days or other hands on training sessions. You will certainly learn some great information from the actual session, but the conversations you strike up with other turfgrass managers or like-minded folks may shine new light on an old topic.
  3. Engage with your community. People outside of your profession can give hints to what trends may very well be coming within your industry. Do your constituents want Free Trade Organic Gluten Free “thing-a-ma-bobs” or would they prefer practical Good Ole Joe “thing-a-ma-bobs”? Societal climates are always changing, so it’s great to keep tabs on what’s in your area.
  4. Read. Industry magazines, newspapers, online articles (this blog!), almost anything… I can’t count the number of times I’ve come across a turfgrass article simply by reading online headlines.  Many times it’s simply a confirmation of something the industry has been discussing for years; adding validity to the topic. Sometimes the article is inaccurate, but it helps us understand where the information comes from that the public often brings to us.

Those are just a few excellent tools to not lose sight of what may or may not be coming our way.

And of course, don’t be afraid to use your own mind and create the innovation that all of us are looking for.
