Artist Talk by Lynn Benson 4/5/18

Join us for an inspiring and thought provoking artist talk by
Lynn Benson as she share details about making the
2018 Beach Museum of Art Gift Print and other recent projects.

About the Exhibition 
The Beach Museum of Art exhibition unveils the acquisition of Benson’s Waterplaces, a suite of 101 drawings on vellum paper. The exhibition will also present the artist’s 2018 Friends of the Beach Museum of Art Gift Print, Dancing on the Table. This work reflects Benson’s interest in water sources that flow under the ground such as the Ogallala Aquifer in parts of Western Kansas and surrounding states. Benson brings attention to this hidden natural treasure in a chine collé lithograph with gold leaf and coloring applied by hand.

Water Stories School Tour:
Students will investigate works from the Beach Museum of Art permanent collection related to water by various artists, including Lynn Benson, Herschel Logan, and photographer Jim Richardson. Students will think about Kansas water issues and the environment and learn more about Kansas waterways above and below ground. Discussions will address environmental science standard K-ESS3.

Screening of Destination: Planet Negro!

The Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art will host a screening of “Destination: Planet Negro!” at 6 p.m. Monday, April 2, in the Wildcat Chamber at the K-State Student Union.

This humorous and insightful “black futurism” film was written and directed by Kevin Willmott, Junction City native and University of Kansas professor of film and media studies, who also plays a main character. Willmott will be present to respond to audience comments and questions after the screening.

The basic premise of the film is that a group of black intellectuals in the 1930s decide that resettlement on Mars is the only hope for African Americans to escape racism. A party of three pioneers boards a rocket ship that, instead of bringing them to Mars, transports them through a time warp to contemporary Kansas City. At first they are elated to learn that Barack Obama is president, thinking racism has been overcome. They gradually learn how unfounded is their optimism.

Here, and Now. Opening Reception 3/15/18

Join us at 6:00 pm on Thursday, March 15 for the opening reception of Here, and Now. Kansas State University Department of Art Faculty Exhibition at the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art.

The works in this exhibition represent the studio practices of fifteen members of the Kansas State University Department of Art. These works, made within the last two years and varying in concept and construction, feature the disciplines of ceramics, drawing, fibers, graphic design, painting, photography, sculpture, and new media. The artists are a diverse group from across the nation and around the world, who now call Manhattan, Kansas, home. Chad Alligood, chief curator of American art at the Huntington Library and formerly curator of the critically acclaimed Crystal Bridges “State of the Art” exhibition, will make remarks in the gallery during the exhibition opening reception.

The galleries will be open and refreshments will be served; cash bar available.
