Friends of the Beach Museum of Art Annual Reception

As a thank you to Friends Members, the Friends of the Beach Museum of Art Annual Reception took place on April 28th.  During this lively evening Friends enjoyed socializing, gallery viewing, hors d’oeurves, wine and voted on the 2015 Friends of the Beach Museum of Art purchase.  Thank you!

Summer 2015 ARTSmart and Young Education Programming

The Hero’s Journey
Spend the summer exploring heroes – from mythology to fairy tales, from super heroes to the hero next door.  This exhibition has been co-curated by high school student Emma Kellogg and is in conjunction with the Manhattan Public Library summer reading theme “Heroes.”

Tuesday            Ages 3-5: 10:30-11:30 a.m., All ages: 3-4 p.m.
Wednesday       Toddlers and Twos: 10:30-11 a.m., All ages: 3-4  p.m.
Thursday          All ages: 10:30-11:30 a.m., Ages 6 & up: 3-4 p.m.

Cost is $3 per child; $1.50 for Friends of the Beach Museum of Art members.  Call 785.532.7718 or e-mail klwalk@k-state.edu to register.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.  If you must cancel, we would appreciate a call.

The Young Artists Programs take place in June with tours, activities and art workshops.  Space is limited and reservations can be made by calling 785.532.7718.

Young Artists & Observers will spend time sketching from nature in “The Meadow” and use professional art materials such as acrylic, cray pas, pastel, prisma colors and linoleum block prints.  One work by each artist will be chosen for display.  $15 per child per class, includes t-shirt.

Young Storytellers will create costumes and props for their original readers theatre performance inspired by art in “The Hero’s Journey” exhibition.   $25 per child, includes t-shirt.

June 23-26: 9:30-11:30 a.m. (ages 9-12) -OR- 1-3 p.m. (ages 6-9)

Young Artists Celebration and Reception June 27, 10:30 a.m. – noon
View works created in the Young Artists Program and attend performances by the Young Storytellers.

Workshops

Found Art Sculpture Workshops July 29, 10-11:30 a.m. or July 30, 10-11:30 a.m.
Visit nearby outdoor sculptures and use found objects to create your own contemporary sculpture.

Mini Stone Garden Workshops August 5, 10-11 a.m. or August 6, 10-11 a.m.
Take a stroll through the installation “Cairns on the Beach” and create a miniature living garden.

2015 Gift Print Artist Dean Mitchell

Artist Dean Mitchell currently has work featured in the exhibition, ” Dean Mitchell: A Place, A Mental Space” and is currently the 2015 Friends of the Beach Museum of Art Gift Print Artist. Mitchell visit the museum the week of April 20th for two special events. On Monday Mitchell gave a private lecture to the museum’s Board of Visitors about his work and his life’s motivation. Thursday, April Mitchell gave a public lecture in the UMB Theater at the Beach Museum about his work and process and inspiration for his work.

The exhibition, “Dean Mitchell: A Place, A Mental Space” will be on display through June 21, 2015 in the Wefald Gallery. Mitchell’s etching “Break Time,” the 2015 Friends of the Beach Museum of Art Gift Print is now available for purchase for Friends of the Beach Museum of Art members at the Sponsor level and above.
