HandsOn Kansas State is partnering with local community organizations to host three service events around Manhattan on Thursday, Sept. 1, as part of the Flint Hills Presidential Community Visit.
The community visits will include a day of conversations, events to highlight community partnerships and extension relationships, service projects and recruitment activities. The events for each regional community visit will be free and open to all Kansans, including community members, leaders, families, current and future students and parents.
K-State students, faculty, and staff, as well as community members, are encouraged to volunteer for one or more of the below volunteer events on Sept. 1.
- The Flint Hills Breadbasket is a nonprofit food pantry that strives to minimize hunger and poverty in our community through the distribution of food and other essential items. At the Flint Hills Breadbasket, volunteers will organize and restock shelves at the pantry. This event will run from 1:30-3 p.m.
- At the Northview Learning Garden, volunteers will work with local schoolchildren and teachers to officially re-open a community learning garden. The team will clear and prepare the site for the school year and learn about the importance of youth exposure to gardening and growing their own produce. This event will run from 2-3:30 p.m.
- In partnership with Harvester’s Community Food Network, HandsOn Kansas State will host a Mobile Food Distribution in the C-1 parking lot north of the K-State Recreation Center. Volunteers will work together to organize and distribute food from 4-5 p.m.
To volunteer for any of these events, please visit the HandsOn K-State website and sign up before Tuesday, Aug. 30. For questions, email handson@ksu.edu.
