In September, more than 1,000 K-State students, faculty, and staff participated in the seventh annual Wildcat Dialogues. Wildcat Dialogues is designed to encourage meaningful dialogue across differences to help create communities of belonging at K-State.
Participants gathered in the K-State Student Union Ballroom for a program featuring student stories about how identity shapes belonging. They then joined small groups led by trained facilitators to discuss these themes, share personal stories, and listen to one another. To conclude, participants were asked a simple question: What can Wildcats do to create communities of belonging at K-State?
The Wildcat Dialogues Planning Committee read through the participants’ ideas and identified common themes, leading to these ten simple action steps that everyone at K-State can follow in order to create a community of belonging for all.
1. Be Genuinely Curious
Approach conversations and experiences with an open mind, eager to explore new ideas and perspectives. Initiate discussions, not just to speak, but to truly listen and understand where others are coming from. By inviting people in and showing interest in their thoughts and experiences, a space for deep and meaningful exchanges can be created. This curiosity can help us ask questions, seek different viewpoints, and grow from the insights discovered together.
2. Ask Questions
Asking thoughtful questions is a powerful way to communicate and connect with others on a deeper level. By asking open-ended, challenging questions, we invite people to share more about what truly matters to them, whether it’s their passions, backgrounds, or life experiences. It’s important to avoid assumptions and instead explore the unique values and perspectives that shape each individual. Through these conversations, we not only gain insight into others’ lives but also foster a deeper understanding of the underlying beliefs and motivations that guide their actions.
3. Listen Actively
Active listening is about truly hearing and understanding what someone is saying, not just preparing a response. To listen actively, focus on the speaker, maintain eye contact, avoid interrupting, and remove distractions. This shows you value their words and are fully engaged in the conversation. It’s also important to listen with the assumption of best intentions. Give others the benefit of the doubt and seek to understand their point of view without jumping to conclusions. By practicing these steps, we can foster deeper connections and create a space where open, meaningful dialogue can thrive.
4. Embrace Courage Over Comfort
Step out of your usual boundaries to embrace new experiences and opportunities. The most personal growth takes place outside of your comfort zone. Make the most of every interaction by getting involved and meeting new people, even when it feels uncomfortable. Take initiative to join an organization or volunteer. By accepting uncomfortability and being willing to put yourself in new situations, you can cultivate a mindset that values growth over ease.
5. Practice Empathy
Step into other people’s shoes to understand different perspectives and what experiences they bring to the table. It’s not always easy to understand someone else’s point of view, so be patient. Listen to understand, not to respond. The impact of our words or actions may differ from our intentions. Even if we meant no harm, the way someone else perceives or feels about what we’ve done or said matters. By staying patient and open, we allow ourselves the space to acknowledge the emotions of others, even when they are difficult to hear. This mindset helps us move past misunderstandings and build stronger, more compassionate connections.
6. Encourage Kindness
Cultivate a culture of kindness, which starts with the small, everyday actions that can make someone’s day a little brighter. A simple smile or a warm “hello” as you pass someone on campus can go a long way in creating a positive atmosphere. Offering a sincere compliment, talking to new people, or holding the door open for others creates a community of belonging. Approach others with a judgment-free attitude, embracing the uniqueness of everyone you encounter. Fostering kindness can create a more welcoming and supportive community for all.
7. Celebrate Diversity
Celebrating diversity includes embracing each other’s authenticity and allowing people to be true to themselves without fear of judgment. This fosters an environment where differences are not only accepted, but celebrated. In a community where everyone feels a sense of belonging, understanding and learning from everyone’s differences is crucial. When we discuss and learn about different cultures, values, and experiences, we enrich our communities and create spaces where everyone belongs.
8. Foster Respect
Fostering respect in a community starts with being intentional about how we treat others. When we show respect, we build trust, which is the foundation for creating a space where everyone feels safe and valued. By treating others the way they want to be treated, rather than assuming what they need, we show that we care about their individuality. In this way, respect creates a community where everyone can belong, knowing they are accepted for who they truly are.
9. Promote Inclusivity
Promoting inclusivity creates a community where everyone feels valued, respected, and seen, regardless of their background or identity. When we actively welcome diverse voices and experiences, we break down barriers and foster an environment where people can be their true selves without fear of judgment. This sense of belonging allows individuals to thrive, knowing they have a place in the community and that their contributions matter. By prioritizing inclusivity, we cultivate a supportive and collaborative space where everyone has the opportunity to grow, connect, and contribute to a shared sense of purpose.
10. Be Intentional
Take the initiative and make the first move in trying something new and expanding your experiences. When we act with purpose and awareness, we create environments where everyone is able to share their unique and diverse experiences. It is crucial to make deliberate choices that reflect a commitment to equality, empathy, and creating a community of belonging for all.
