Kerry Priest, Ph.D., associate professor in the Staley School of Leadership Studies and director of the Leadership Communication Doctoral Program, is a co-editor and contributor to a special issue of New Directions for Student Leadership (NDSL) on the theme of leadership education through complex transitions.
NDSL is a quarterly series that explores leadership concepts and pedagogical topics of interest to educators who design courses and programs for students in high school and university contexts. This special issue was a process and product of more than a year-long collaborative inquiry between leadership educators across eight U.S. higher education institutions.
The research project began as a response to a confluence of crisis: the global health pandemic, heightened political polarization, racial injustices, and disrupted educational systems to name a few. The central question of the collaborative inquiry was: How do leadership educators continue to learn, sustain themselves, and support their students and each other during difficult transitions?
Staley School of Leadership Studies faculty and staff contribute scholarship that advances the broader field of leadership studies. Priest’s collaboration supports the professional development of leadership educators and developers who are working to build the capacity of individuals, communities, and organizations that are resilient to the ever-changing world.
The articles in this issue reflect stories and themes relevant to all educators. Readers are invited to engage and ask their own powerful questions through which to make meaning, gain insight, and inspire courageous action in uncertainty.
