On Saturday, Dec. 20, K-State will start blocking the SMTP e-mail protocol on the residence-hall networks and the campus wireless network. This is necessary in order to intercept the large numbers of spam e-mails sent by compromised computers on those network segments and to help keep K-State off spam block lists.
As noted in the original announcement, this will only affect the residence-hall wired and wireless networks (SSID = k-state.res) and the campus wireless network (SSID=k-state.net). All other network segments, including the guest wireless network (SSID = k-state.guest), will be unaffected. Likewise, this will not affect anyone using any K-State e-mail system, either central or departmental, nor will it affect anyone using a web browser to access e-mail systems such as K-State’s WebMail, Zimbra, Gmail, Hotmail, etc.
Students living in the residence halls will be notified by Housing and Dining Services before they leave for the holiday. If you have any questions, contact Harvard Townsend, K-State’s chief information security officer (harv@k-state.edu, 785-532-2985).
