IT Security Threats blog now available for K-Staters

The IT Security Threats blog is now available to alert K-Staters about the latest threats to K-State information and technology resources. The blog will be updated by K-State’s IT security team with news and alerts about malicious software (malware) and other types of security attacks; vulnerabilities in applications and operating systems used at K-State; patches to those vulnerabilities; and the latest e-mail scams to appear in K-Staters’ inboxes.

“We needed a way to improve communication with the campus about IT security threats, vulnerabilities, and patches, and reach as many people as possible by providing the information through multiple channels,” said Chief Information Security Officer Harvard Townsend. “With this blog, people can choose a method for receiving information that best fits their communication preferences.”

There are three ways to get information for the new IT Security Threats blog:

  • Web: Visit threats.itsecurity.k-state.edu and read the blog.
  • E-mail: Subscribe to the “SIRT-THREATS” LISTSERV mailing list to receive the posts by e-mail whenever the blog is updated. Click the LISTSERV button near the top of the page and enter your information on the following page.
  • RSS feed: Subscribe to the RSS feed to have articles automatically delivered to the RSS reader in your favorite Internet tool like iGoogle, Netvibes, Live Bookmarks in Firefox, etc.
Click on the RSS icon in the upper right corner of the blog rss, select your product from the drop-down menu, and click “Subscribe Now”. You can also copy the web address of the RSS feed (threats.itsecurity.k-state.edu/?feed=rss2) into any feed reader of your choice.

Advanced blog features allow IT security staff or system administrators with security responsibilities to take part in discussions on posted articles and view private posts. This access requires registration and is limited to current K-State faculty and staff who are approved by the IT security team. To apply for access to the advanced features, e-mail security@k-state.edu and an IT security team member will determine eligibility before adding you to the site.

The IT security team believes this blog will better equip faculty, staff, and students by filtering the vast amount of information generated daily about IT security threats into a more focused list for the K-State community. The net result will be more informed computer users, reduced risk to K-State information and technology resources, and a safer, more productive online experience for everyone.

If you have any questions, send e-mail to security@k-state.edu.
