Mobile device tip: Disable Bluetooth and gain battery life

How often do you use Bluetooth wireless protocol on your mobile device? Probably not very often unless you’re using one of those “stylish” wireless earpieces. What does Bluetooth do while it’s just sitting there? Simple; it’s using up battery power.

A little-known fact about Bluetooth technology is that it’s quite power-hungry. Some individuals have reported significant gains in battery life simply by disabling Bluetooth technology on their mobile devices.

What does “significant” mean? Users report up to a 33 percent gain in battery life. If your current battery life is about 24 hours, disabling Bluetooth could add up to 8 hours of battery life.  Over the course of 8 hours with similar usage, this author used 20 percent less battery with Bluetooth disabled. Keep in mind, your mileage may vary.

To disable Bluetooth on a BlackBerry:

  • Open the Options application.
  • Choose the Bluetooth option.
  • Press the BlackBerry Blackberry Button button.
  • Choose Disable Bluetooth.

To disable Bluetooth for Windows Mobile:

  • Click the Start menu.
  • Click Settings.
  • Click the Connections tab.
  • Click Bluetooth.
  • Click the Mode tab.
  • Uncheck the “Turn on Bluetooth” box.
  • Click the OK button in the top right corner of the screen.

To disable Bluetooth for iPhone:

  • Click Settings.
  • Click General.
  • Click Bluetooth.
  • Move the slider to the Off position.
