Amazon Kindle books now available in iPhone, iPod touch

Last week Amazon released a free Kindle application for the iPhone and iPod touch through the Apple App Store. This application allows you to read Kindle books on your iPhone or iPod touch. Currently you can read books purchased through your Kindle or directly from the Amazon Kindle web store.

The app does not yet allow for the direct purchase of books. To buy books from the iPhone and iPod touch, you will need to go to the Amazon Kindle store website using the Safari browser on an iPhone or iPod touch.

When you use the Kindle app for the first time, it will ask you to log into your Amazon account and it will then show you the books you have purchased. You can then select the ones that you would like to download to your iPhone or iPod touch.  The app features the ability to change the font size for a more comfortable reading experience and also allows you to view any notes that you have made on the actual Kindle concerning the books you are reading.

One neat feature is that if you own a Kindle and are reading books on your iPhone or iPod touch, the app will sync your current location in a book with your Kindle and vice versa.

Right now, it’s a nice start for Amazon. However, it would be nicer if they added the ability to purchase books through the app as well as add the ability to read newspapers and magazines that are available in the Kindle store.
