Every year, students have the opportunity to spend winter and spring breaks doing a number of things. Some students spend time at home or elsewhere, taking advantage of the opportunity for rest, relaxation, or additional hours to work at their jobs in their home communities or around Manhattan. International Service Teams, formerly part of Community Service Programs, first began in 1989. Since that time, over 400 K-State students have lived and worked alongside communities in 22 different countries on five continents. While the program, partners, and students have changed over the years, the core has remained the same—that service is reciprocal, that our teams are going to learn from and with the community, and that the service projects are driven and determined by our site partners. Academic Mentoring is a program activity of HandsOn Kansas State, focused on the academic success of youth in the Greater Manhattan community. The Academic Mentoring program selects, trains, and places K-State students in school and community-based classrooms and programs that promote and support family literacy efforts and youth development. Crunching leaves on a driveway while raking for senior citizens, clearing brush at Sunset Zoo next to the cheetahs, picking up litter along the interstate, building relationships as an international buddy, mentoring youth towards their goals—these are some of my most memorable times at K-State. Alongside fellow students at Leadership Studies and with brothers from Acacia Fraternity who center on Human Service, I’m soaked in so many experiences that continue to inspire my involvement with service today and also evoke a deep desire to give back to the organizations and communities that have helped make me the person I am. This event is held to honor those who have demonstrated exceptional service, leadership, and civic engagement at K-State, in the Manhattan community, and beyond. In the 2016-2017 school year, Kansas State University students had the opportunity to visit Denver, Colorado; Kansas City, Missouri; and Tahlequah, Oklahoma; to understand the various aspects of specific social issues through the Alternative Breaks program at the Staley School of Leadership Studies.
Alternative Breaks is an opportunity for students to participate in an intense service experience during their winter, spring, and weekend breaks. Participants travel to communities around the country where they work with local residents to address a pressing social issue. Breaks are open to K-State graduate, undergraduate, and international students.
Throughout the Midwest, teams of students performed a variety of tasks throughout their week-long trips ranging from cleaning, building, and working directly with the clients.
