Last week, a group of Mandela Washington Fellows arrived in the city of Manhattan, Kansas for the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), hosted by the Staley School of Leadership at Kansas State University. This remarkable group of young African leaders are here for a six-week Civic Leadership Institute. Throughout the course of the institute, the Staley School will facilitate opportunities for cultural exchange and leadership development to advance the work of each Fellow by growing their capacity to lead change upon return to their home countries. Introducing the 2017 Mandela Washington Fellows
For the second consecutive summer, from June 16 to July 30, the Staley School of Leadership Studies will host a group of 25 bright and emerging young civic leaders from Sub-Sahara Africa for a six-week Civic Leadership Institute. Throughout the course of the institute, the Staley School will facilitate opportunities for cultural exchange and leadership development to advance the work of each Fellow by growing their capacity to lead change upon return to their home countries.

Student Learning Extends Beyond the Classroom
The Staley School of Leadership Studies is committed to promoting learning both inside and outside the classroom. In addition to service-learning and civic engagement activities, students also have opportunities to learn through travel and participation at conferences and other leadership development activities.

Mandela Washington Fellows: 2016 Civic Leadership Institute
In the summer of 2016, the Staley School of Leadership Studies hosted 27 Mandela Washington Fellows for a Civic Leadership Institute. The Mandela Fellowship is part of the Young African Leaders Initiative, established by the Obama Administration to help develop the next generation of leaders in Africa. Each Mandela Washington Fellow is a leader in their home community, recognized for their positive contributions to innovation and change across the continent of Africa. During their time at K-State, the 2016 Mandela Washington Fellows engaged in a diverse array of leadership development and cultural exchange activities to grow their capacity to make change upon their return home.
