Agroforestry in Semi-Arid Farming Systems: Maximizing Soil Fertility and Crop Productivity

 

Dr. Jerry Glover, Senior Sustainable Agricultural Systems Advisor for USAID Bureau for Food Security and Dr. Aliou Faye, Senior Researcher at ISRA and Senegal Country Coordinator for SIIL, discuss the millet cropping system in Senegal just north of the Gambia Border. This semi-arid region is marked by a distinct dry and rainy season with approximately 600 mm of average rainfall and highly degraded sandy soils. Agroforestry plays an important role in this millet cropping system. During the dry season, farmers’ fields are dominated by shrubs and trees which either have reverse phenology by dropping their leaves in the rainy season or are cut back prior to millet planting and provide surprising benefits to soil fertility and millet productivity. The shrubs and trees deep roots bring water to the surface through hydraulic lift, the leguminous species fix atmospheric nitrogen to improve soil fertility, falling leaves provide the soil with organic matter so nutrients are used more efficiently and made more available, and the shade of the trees in the dry season attract cattle which also contribute fertilizer in the form of manure.

Equipping University Laboratories: Creating the Foundation for Food Safety Research and Impacts in Low and Middle Income Countries

Einstein is credited with saying “Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts.” The same may be said about the role of local university capacity– both human and institutional—in regards to data generation, student training, and information sharing and dissemination. In many low and middle income countries, local universities lack capacity to conduct necessary research for food safety. This is a deficiency, particularly when considering the role that poor food hygiene and safety practices play on human health outcomes. Several sources have implicated enteric infections as contributing factors to the infection-malnutrition paradigm, and repeated enteric infections—specifically among children under the age of 5—have been linked to slow gains in global child nutrition outcomes (e.g. stunting; Crane et al., 2015; Lin et al., 2013; Guerrant et al., 2012; Poonum and Petri, 2012). Furthermore, the World Health Organization (WHO) has determined that “the global burden of Foodborne Disease is comparable to those of the three major infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis” (Havelaar et al., 2015). Conservation Challenges for Sustainable Intensification of Agriculture in Africa

Protected areas (PAs) are critical for conservation of species and ecosystems. Since 1990, global terrestrial area designated as PAs has increased more than 50%  (Juffe-Bignoli et al., 2014). While PAs are often criticized for negatively impacting the livelihoods of marginalized rural communities, contrasting dynamics have emerged outside PAs. Increasing employment opportunities, resource availability, and improved market access in PA buffers have led to higher rates of population growth in these areas compared to other rural areas (Wittemyer et al., 2008). As human populations expand and encroach upon natural habitats, many animal species face increasing competition with people for resources and space, often resulting in habitat loss and degradation. The effectiveness of PAs is also impacted by what takes place outside their boundaries (Hansen and DeFries, 2007). Species such as wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) use areas outside reserves for their annual migration, while African elephants (Loxodonta africana) range widely and routinely leave protected areas. Agricultural conversion and urban expansion disrupt the wildlife corridors and restrict animal populations within PAs. As a result, some species, such as the African elephant, are coming into increasing conflict with people. Human-elephant conflict takes many forms, from crop raiding to infrastructure damage, and can cause injury or death to people and/or elephants. This presents a critical challenge for PA management and food security of local communities.
