Students and parents always have a host of questions about computing during New Student Orientation and Enrollment. Below are a few asked over the first several days.
1. What do I need when bringing a computer to campus?
K-State Information Technology Services provides minimum requirements when bringing a computer to campus. There also are minimum recommendations when buying a new computer. See the 2011-2012 computer recommendations website.
2. Do other antivirus programs have to be removed when installing K-State’s Trend Micro version?
Yes. If they aren’t, the computer will run sloooowwww. Portions of MACKeeper (for Apple computers) can remain on the computer, but the antivirus program itself must be removed.
3. What’s required for computers that will be in the residence halls?
About 95 percent of the network registration process can be completed before coming to campus. See the Network Registration page for details.
4. Will the residence halls provide Ethernet cables for physical network connections?
No. K-State recommends that students bring or purchase an Ethernet cable before coming to campus.
5. Can I access Facebook, Twitter, etc. on campus?
Yes.
6. I forgot my password. What should I do?
Students should call the IT Help Desk (785-532-7722) to get their password reset.
7. Is it better to buy a computer now or wait until the student comes to campus?
It depends. About 98 percent of students will bring some type of mobile device to campus. ITS suggests reviewing the university recommendations and college and departmental recommendations and consulting departmental advisors prior to making a decision.
8. When working in the computer labs, where can a student store the files they are working on?
K-State Zimbra Briefcase is one option. A thumb drive is another option. Students can also email files to themselves.
9. Where’s the ice cream?
If you have completed the entire New Student Orientation and Enrollment process, the Alumni Center is dishing out Call Hall ice cream.
