What version of Microsoft Word or Office is on my computer?

Many people have no idea what version of Microsoft Word or Office they are using. That’s understandable. Who can remember version numbers for every piece of software on their computer?

On a Windows PC, a fast way to identify your version is to open a Word document and compare the small logo at top left to the logo versions below.

The logo of the new Word 2016 coming out for Windows is similar to the Word 2013 logo. (Interestingly, the new Mac version is also named Word 2016, but that’s another story.)

For both Windows and Mac computers, the definitive method is to open a Word document and follow these steps:

  • Windows computers:  Click File.  In the left navigation bar, click Account. On the Account screen, look in the right column near the top.
  • Mac computers:  Click Word > About Word.

For more software details, including which service pack is installed or whether it’s a 32-bit or 64-bit version, see Microsoft’s What version of Office am I using? webpage at support.office.com. It covers major Word versions plus these:

  • Microsoft Office 365
  • Microsoft Office 2016 for Windows
  • Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac
  • Microsoft Office 2013 RT
