I’d like to learn more about using Mac computers. What training and resources are available at K-State and elsewhere?
This is a common question nowadays, given the continuing user trend toward Macs in the U.S. (netmarketshare.com reports Mac operating system market share is 11.46 percent this month).
Mac resources at K-State
- Mac training resources from Information Technology Services provide news, tips, how-tos, software, and more.
- IT security resources include Mac-related downloads, updates, and best security practices that pertain to both Macs and PCs.
- The Media Development Center, 214 Hale Library, has six Macs for use by K-Staters; some Mac classes; multimedia resources; and student consultants to answer questions.
- The College of Education has some Mac resources online via its Catalyst center.
- The local Kaw River Macintosh Users’ Group meets 10 a.m.-noon on the second Saturday of each month, in Room 16, Bluemont Hall.
- Mac questions can be sent to the IT Help Desk (785-532-7722, helpdesk@k-state.edu) and/or the Union Computer Store, which is an Apple Authorized Campus Store.
- Travis Heideman (785-320-0414, travis_heideman@me.com) is the new Apple campus student representative at K-State. He welcomes all questions about Macs.

- Apple’s MAC 101 introduction is “Your guide to using a Mac effectively and efficiently”. It includes a tour of the Mac interface; basic tasks and using applications; customizing your Mac; connecting printers, cameras, and other peripherals; troubleshooting; and more. (PC users who’ve switched to a Mac may find the Switch 101 introduction useful.)
- The Genius Bar at any Apple retail store provides help, training, and troubleshooting assistance. Reservations can be made for specific appointment times.
- Free workshops are offered at Apple retail stores on getting started, photos, videos, music, Web, productivity, and business.
