“Exploring Social Media with NodeXL Basic” is a two-hour session that introduces some of the social media data extraction and network graphing functionalities of an open-source and freeware tool NodeXL Basic. This event will be 1:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, April 15, in 401B Hale Library.
- Ever wonder what sorts of #hashtagged conversations may be occurring on Twitter and who the discussants are? Curious about the social networks of particular @accounts on Twitter?
- Wonder what a public-facing social network looks like on Facebook? A private one?
- Intrigued by a related tags network from Flickr? An article network on Wikipedia? A video network on YouTube? A user network on YouTube?
NodeXL (Network Overview, Discovery and Exploration for Excel) is an add-on to Excel 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2016, that enables the exploration of network graphs. This add-on is available for download off of the Microsoft CodePlex site. This software is supported by the Social Media Research Foundation. In 2015, an advanced cost version of NodeXL was released with rudimentary sentiment analysis capabilities.
There is an open-source book “Querying Social Media with NodeXL” that highlights some of the social media capabilities of the tool.
No prior knowledge is required. Bring a laptop with NodeXL installed to follow along or to try specific data extractions and graph visualizations. No RSVP is needed. All are welcome.
