University shred days: Oct. 19 Manhattan campus, Nov. 2 Salina campus

K-State’s All University Shred Day is

  • 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, on the K-State-Manhattan campus
  • 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday, Nov. 2, on the K-State-Salina campus

Departments can place their paper documents with personal identity information (Social Security numbers, birth dates, credit card numbers, etc.) in designated bags and deliver to one of two locations — Mid Campus Drive near the Union, or the Dole Hall parking lots. Empty bags can be picked up at the iTAC Receptionist Desk in 214 Hale Library. The campus shred day authorization form (PDF) must be completed.

Spotlight: Pixenate.com, a photo-editing tool

Check out pixenate.com, a simple, web-based photo editor. How does it work?

  1. Upload your photo to the website.
  2. Edit using any one of a number of photo-editing tools, including cropping, color balance, resize, rotate, and more.
  3. The edited photo can be saved or uploaded to a website such as Flickr.

Reminder: University Shred Day is Tuesday, Oct. 19

K-State is planning a University Shred Day 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19 for university paper records. Departments will be asked to place their paper documents with personal identity information (Social Security numbers, birth dates, credit card numbers, etc.) in designated bags and deliver to one of two locations: the median near Anderson Hall or the Dole Hall parking lots.

Departments that cannot bring their documents to the designated areas may contact iTAC at 785-532-4918 to schedule a time and location for pick-up. For security reasons, do not leave collection bags for shredding unattended in the hallways.

Spotlight: Photo of Saturday’s storm captured by iPhone

The editors couldn’t resist sharing a picture from Saturday’s (Sept. 25) thunderstorm about three minutes into the start of the K-State football game in Manhattan. The picture below was taken by Eric Dover, manager of Client Services in iTAC, using an iPhone 4. It illustrates the advantages of high-quality cameras in newer cellphone technology.

Mathematica 7 open training seminar Sept. 14

To support the Mathematica site license at Kansas State University, Wolfram Research will be on campus Tuesday, Sept. 14, to provide training for Mathematica 7. This training session will be 12:30-1:30 p.m. in 401 Hale Library, and there will be time after the training session to answer technical and licensing questions about Mathematica.

Mathematica is often thought of as useful for only math, but this training session will illustrate why Version 7 changes the pedagogy of teaching within biology, chemistry, economics, physics, engineering, and a number of other academic departments. ITS welcomes Kenneth Stafford, CIO

Information Technology Services (ITS) welcomed Kenneth Stafford as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Vice Provost for Information Technology Services at K-State on Monday, Aug. 9.

As CIO, Stafford leads a staff of about 200 technical and nontechnical professionals. He has strategic oversight of services including networking and server/storage infrastructure and services; academic, administrative, and instructional technologies and support services; desktop support; technology training; information and technology security; infrastructure for research computing; data and information management; communications; and university IT policies, standards, and procedures.

Before you purchase that TV, monitor, or other hardware, check out Nari Ward’s Airplane Tears (2005) currently on exhibit at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art at Johnson County Community College.

This signature wall art is constructed with found TV backs and handkerchiefs. It is 39 feet wide, 16 feet high, and 2 feet deep.

Node chair available for test drives until Aug. 3

Scott Rice Office Works has made a node chair (from manufacturer Steelcase) available to K-Staters for a test drive until Tuesday, Aug. 3; come over to iTAC (212 Hale Library) and try it out.

The node offers a flexible seat with no pneumatic adjustments; an adjustable workspace; swivel seat; and casters or gliders. The mobility allows for ease of room configuration — in rows of seats, or small and large group configurations.
