Libraries sponsor Fair Use webinar Nov. 2

Have you ever wondered exactly what constitutes Fair Use in your classroom? The increased use of music and movies for educational purposes can make these determinations confusing. Join K-State Libraries for a 60-minute brownbag webinar, Music, Movies & Online Media: Fair Use Do’s & Don’ts for Higher Ed at noon-1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, in Hale 301. Highlights of the webinar include:

  • How to avoid copyright violations when using DVDs and CDs
  • Guidelines for applying fair use law to music and movies
  • Keys to handling personal and institutional liability issues
  • What your rights are for copying DVDs, CDs, movies, and video clips

Free VLC media player handles variety of video, audio, other formats

Do you have a media file or DVD that won’t play in Windows Media Player or QuickTime? Try the VLC media player, a free, open-source, cross-platform (Windows, OSX, Linux, and more) software. It will play a wide variety of media formats without the need for downloading additional codec packs.

Some of the various functions of VLC include support for video and audio formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, etc.), DVDs, VCDs, and various  streaming  protocols. Continue reading “Free VLC media player handles variety of video, audio, other formats”

Create videos easily with Jing

Have you ever wanted an easy way to make videos on your computer? Ever thought video screen capture would be great, but think it would too hard to figure out how to create the video, put it online, and stream it?

Jing is here to help. Jing provides an easy-to-use three-step process to:

  1. create a video
  2. upload it to a server
  3. embed or link to the video on a webpage or in an e-mail

After installing and running the Jing program, a small, sun-like icon appears at the top of or in the corner of your desktop. Upon clicking it, you have three options — you can capture, see your recorded history, or adjust the settings.

Tegrity transition to MP4 video format

K-State is transitioning Tegrity services to a non-proprietary MP4 video format. Converted lectures have been uploaded into courses, and Web Presentation Services will complete the process before the start of the Spring 2009 semester. The streaming capabilities of the Tegrity server will be turned off at 5 p.m. today, Jan. 13. Continue reading “Tegrity transition to MP4 video format”
