Last week, a group of Mandela Washington Fellows arrived in the city of Manhattan, Kansas for the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), hosted by the Staley School of Leadership at Kansas State University. This remarkable group of young African leaders are here for a six-week Civic Leadership Institute. Throughout the course of the institute, the Staley School will facilitate opportunities for cultural exchange and leadership development to advance the work of each Fellow by growing their capacity to lead change upon return to their home countries. For the second consecutive summer, from June 16 to July 30, the Staley School of Leadership Studies will host a group of 25 bright and emerging young civic leaders from Sub-Sahara Africa for a six-week Civic Leadership Institute. Throughout the course of the institute, the Staley School will facilitate opportunities for cultural exchange and leadership development to advance the work of each Fellow by growing their capacity to lead change upon return to their home countries.

Academic Mentors Impact Local Youth through Wonder Workshop
Academic Mentoring is a program activity of HandsOn Kansas State, focused on the academic success of youth in the Greater Manhattan community. The Academic Mentoring program selects, trains, and places K-State students in school and community-based classrooms and programs that promote and support family literacy efforts and youth development. More Than a Program—It’s a Family
Whenever someone mentions the Staley School of Leadership Studies, my face lights up! For me, it truly felt like a second home (and not because SSLS started out as Leadership Studies and Programs in two houses located on Manhattan Avenue). It was my home away from home because it had that family atmosphere. Leadership Studies is where I learned about my abilities and skills as a leader because the faculty and staff knew their students on a deeper level beyond the classroom. Growing Leadership Capacity through Service-Learning

Crunching leaves on a driveway while raking for senior citizens, clearing brush at Sunset Zoo next to the cheetahs, picking up litter along the interstate, building relationships as an international buddy, mentoring youth towards their goals—these are some of my most memorable times at K-State. Alongside fellow students at Leadership Studies and with brothers from Acacia Fraternity who center on Human Service, I’m soaked in so many experiences that continue to inspire my involvement with service today and also evoke a deep desire to give back to the organizations and communities that have helped make me the person I am.
