International Service Teams, formerly part of Community Service Programs, first began in 1989. Since that time, over 400 K-State students have lived and worked alongside communities in 22 different countries on five continents. While the program, partners, and students have changed over the years, the core has remained the same—that service is reciprocal, that our teams are going to learn from and with the community, and that the service projects are driven and determined by our site partners. A Transformational K-State Experience

As a current English teacher in Kansas City, Kansas, I have been enjoying the additional time for reflection that summer brings. With the Staley School of Leadership Studies (SSLS) celebrating its 20th year, many of these reflections have been on my own undergraduate experience and engagement in the Staley School. My name is Whitney Morgan, and I am a Nonprofit Leadership Studies minor, class of 2012. When asked to serve on a committee for the School’s 20th Year Engagement Initiative, there was no question that I wanted to give back to a program that gave so much to me.

Whenever someone mentions the Staley School of Leadership Studies, my face lights up! For me, it truly felt like a second home (and not because SSLS started out as Leadership Studies and Programs in two houses located on Manhattan Avenue). It was my home away from home because it had that family atmosphere. Leadership Studies is where I learned about my abilities and skills as a leader because the faculty and staff knew their students on a deeper level beyond the classroom. Crunching leaves on a driveway while raking for senior citizens, clearing brush at Sunset Zoo next to the cheetahs, picking up litter along the interstate, building relationships as an international buddy, mentoring youth towards their goals—these are some of my most memorable times at K-State. Alongside fellow students at Leadership Studies and with brothers from Acacia Fraternity who center on Human Service, I’m soaked in so many experiences that continue to inspire my involvement with service today and also evoke a deep desire to give back to the organizations and communities that have helped make me the person I am. Since 1997, we have engaged with students in ways that help develop and cultivate their leadership capacity.
