Basic Authentication for Office 365 to be disabled

Microsoft has announced that they are turning off Basic Authentication (eID and password only) in Exchange Online. The overall scope of the program includes Exchange Web Services (EWS), Exchange ActiveSync (EAS), POP, IMAP, Remote PowerShell, MAPI, RPC, SMTP AUTH, and OAB.

Basic Authentication is an outdated industry standard, and making this change will improve security. Therefore, the Division of Information Technology (IT) will disable Basic Authentication during January for those not currently using it and prevent new service uses.

After October 1, 2022, all clients and apps that use Office 365 Basic Authentication in that tenant will be affected and unable to connect. Any client or app using Modern Authentication (multiple-factor authentication) will not be affected. Users can use alternate clients (for example, Outlook on the Web instead of an older Outlook client that does not support Modern Authentication) while upgrading or reconfiguring their client apps.

If you are using Office 365 Basic Authentication, contact your department IT representative to make the change. If you do not have a department IT representative, contact the IT Help Desk at 785-532-7722.
