Duo two-factor enrollment begins Feb. 15

Cybersecurity is a significant concern in our technology-driven world, and K-State must be more vigilant. Unfortunately, over 90% of breaches today involve compromised usernames and passwords. To keep your personal information safe, K-State offers Duo two-factor authentication to provide a second layer of security for your account by using a secondary device to verify your identity. This prevents anyone but you from accessing your account, even if they know your password.

What do I need to do?

On Feb. 15, K-State will begin enrolling students in Duo two-factor authentication. Students have been randomly added to enrollment groups, so you may receive your enrollment email in February, March, or April. When you receive your enrollment email, follow the instructions in the email and enroll in Duo, and set up your authentication device. You need to complete your enrollment within two weeks of receiving the email. Enrollment usually takes less than five minutes and requires a laptop or desktop computer and a mobile device for self-enrollment. For step-by-step enrollment instructions, view the Duo Enrollment Guide.

What happens if I don’t enroll in Duo?

Duo enrollment is mandatory. If you do not self-enroll by the enrollment deadline listed in the email, you will be automatically enrolled in Duo. Remember that students automatically enrolled in Duo must still set up their authentication devices. If you do not set up an authentication device, you will not be able to access K-State’s online tools and services. For example, you will not be able to access KSIS without authenticating with Duo. At this time, Duo will not be required for access to Canvas.

What is two-factor authentication?

Duo two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your online accounts. Verifying your identity using a second factor, like your phone or another mobile device, prevents anyone but you from accessing your account, even if they know your password. You may already be using two-factor authentication in your personal life via streaming services and online banking.

What if I don’t have a smartphone or don’t want to use it for authentication?

Students can authenticate with Duo by using a hardware token. A standard hardware token is a small device similar to a keychain fob. Some tokens look identical to a USB flash drive and contain small storage. Hardware tokens provide a passcode that students can use to authenticate with Duo. Tokens can be purchased for $15 at the ID Center in the K-State Student Union (Manhattan), ID Center (Salina), and IT Support (Olathe).
