K-State utilizing geolocation for cybersecurity

""The internet is an incredible tool for learning and sharing information, but it also poses a cybersecurity threat. To prevent hackers from stealing your personal information, K-State uses geolocation to protect accounts from being compromised by using IP information. If any suspicious activity is detected, the user will receive an email notification with recommendations on the necessary next steps, which may include updating account passwords.

How does geolocation work?

When you connect to the internet using your phone, computer or tablet, your device is assigned a unique identifier known as an IP address. K-State utilizes IP-based geolocation to identify the country or city from which a device accesses its services and resources. This information is essential for detecting and preventing potential cyber threats. K-State only uses this data to analyze typical login patterns for your account and determine the safety of new logins.

You may already be familiar with geolocation through online banking, video streaming and gaming services. Geolocation technology is also referred to as geopositioning, geo-tracking and geolocalization.
