K-State is using geolocation technology to enhance cybersecurity

The internet is a powerful tool for learning and sharing information, but it also presents cybersecurity risks. To protect against hackers who might steal personal information, K-State utilizes geolocation to safeguard accounts by monitoring IP addresses. If suspicious activity is detected, users will receive an email notification with guidance on the necessary next steps, including updating their account passwords.

How Geolocation Works

When you connect to the internet using a phone, computer or tablet, your device is assigned a unique identifier called an IP address. K-State uses IP-based geolocation to determine the country or city from which a device accesses its services and resources. This information is crucial for detecting and preventing potential cyber threats. K-State uses this data solely to analyze typical login patterns for your account and assess the safety of new login attempts.

You may already be familiar with geolocation through online banking, video streaming and gaming services. Geolocation technology is also known as geopositioning, geo-tracking and geolocalization.
