Reduce ink-printing costs with Ecofont

K-Staters looking for a way to reduce printing costs might want to consider using Ecofont. This font style, created by the Dutch company Spranq, was designed to use less ink than other fonts — about 15 percent to 20 percent less — by placing small holes throughout the typeface.

8 million+ ID thefts target college-aged, but everyone needs prevention steps

A general misconception is that identity theft occurs primarily to either the middle-aged or to senior citizens. A recent report published with data from the Federal Trade Commission debunks this myth by clearly showing that the group most affected by this crime is college-aged individuals.

In the January-December 2008 report (PDF, 101 pages) compiled by the Consumer Sentinel Network, there were more than 300,000 identity-theft complaints registered in 2008, with 24 percent of complaints made by individuals from 20 to 29 years of age.

The Consumer Sentinel Network is a partnership between several federal-level law enforcement entities, including the Federal Trade Commission and the Internet Crime Complaint Center. Their 2008 report is based on data from several cooperating federal agencies. Even though the report indicates 300,000 identity-theft complaints were registered, the FTC estimates that nearly 9 million U.S. citizens have their identity stolen each year.

Create your own PDF files

Have you ever wanted to make your own PDF files? The process has become increasingly simple over the last few years and now there are several free options out there for both PCs and Macs. Think of these solutions as PDF printers but instead of producing a sheet of paper with your document, a file will be saved instead.

While these solutions will create PDF files, they will not create fillable PDF forms. To produce a fillable PDF form, you will need to purchase a solution like Adobe Acrobat Standard or Pro (see Adobe’s Product comparison webpage).

Customize your RSS feeds with Yahoo Pipes

yahoo-pipesHave you ever had a bunch of RSS feeds that were very similar and that you wished were just one aggregate feed? For instance, many sites publish a number of feeds for different parts of their content, and it would often be more useful to have all that content in one feed so you don’t have to check multiple sources for the content.

Or, have you ever had a bunch of feeds that share a certain topic and that you’d rather be in one feed rather than separated?

Yahoo Pipes offers a simple way to aggregate feeds. Yahoo Pipes is a service that has a wide range of applications and can be used for some fairly complex tasks. For this example, we will use it to easily perform three tasks:

  1. Retrieve a number of RSS feeds
  2. Aggregate and sort the feeds
  3. Republish the feeds as a single RSS feed
