IT Security Awareness: Protect yourself and your identity

According to the US Department of Justice, more than 17 million Americans were victims of identity theft in 2014. EDUCAUSE research shows that 21 percent of respondents to the annual ECAR student study have had an online account hacked, and 14 percent have had a computer, tablet, or smartphone stolen.

At K-State during 2016, 2655 phishing scams were reported resulting in 1213 compromised accounts.

IT security roundtable May 6: Traveling Safely

Summertime makes Manhattan seem like a ghost town as K-State students, faculty, and staff hit the roads and airways for distant lands. The potential rewards of personal and professional travel are great, but so are the security risks. Thus, this month’s IT security roundtable will discuss tips on how to travel safely so people can protect themselves from identity theft, financial fraud, and other threats related to information and technology while on vacation.

University shred days: Oct. 19 Manhattan campus, Nov. 2 Salina campus

K-State’s All University Shred Day is

  • 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, on the K-State-Manhattan campus
  • 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday, Nov. 2, on the K-State-Salina campus

Departments can place their paper documents with personal identity information (Social Security numbers, birth dates, credit card numbers, etc.) in designated bags and deliver to one of two locations — Mid Campus Drive near the Union, or the Dole Hall parking lots. Empty bags can be picked up at the iTAC Receptionist Desk in 214 Hale Library. The campus shred day authorization form (PDF) must be completed.

Five things you need to know about IT security at K-State

Thousands of new faculty, staff, and students have arrived and a new semester has begun, so it is time to remind everyone of their personal responsibility in protecting themselves online and keeping K-State information and technology safe. To quote IT security experts, “the Internet is a bad neighborhood,”* and based on the number of security incidents at K-State thus far in 2009, it’s getting worse. You can still function safely online, though, if you take the time to learn about security and “think before you click.” Here are five things you need to know about IT security at K-State:

  1. Never give your password to anyone in an e-mail message. K-State has been plagued by more than 200 instances of e-mail scams over the last year that try to trick people into replying with their eID password (yes, that’s nearly one per day). In fact, thus far in 2009, nearly 300 K-Staters have had their eID password stolen this way. If you remember this one simple rule, you can prevent becoming a victim of these scams:  K-State IT support staff will never ask for your password in an e-mail, nor will any legitimate business or organization. If you get such an e-mail, just delete it.

IT Security Roundtable May 8: Traveling safely

The time is nigh for K-State students, faculty, and staff to vacate Manhattan for distant lands over the summer. Thus, this month’s IT security roundtable, which is 9-10:30 a.m. Friday, May 8, in Union 213, will discuss tips on how to travel safely so people can protect themselves from identity theft, financial fraud, and other threats related to information and technology while on vacation. Free document shredding April 18 in Manhattan

A free “Shred Day” is being offered by Document Resources Inc. 9-11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at 414 South 5th St. in Manhattan, so people can bring their personal paper documents from home and have them shredded at no charge. This is a great opportunity to do some spring cleaning and safely get rid of obsolete documents with sensitive information, such as:
