Microsoft Word, Excel, Access training June 23-July

[Editor’s note, June 29: Additions/updates to the schedule below are in yellow highlight.]

Faculty/staff and students can make this summer a time to get up to speed on Microsoft Office software. No enrollment is necessary for these free sessions (although K-Staters may e-mail bcad@k-state.edu and note the session they wish to attend).

Office 2007 Enterprise lower price for back-to-school

Through November, Office Enterprise 2007 for Windows will be offered by the Union Computer Store to K-State faculty/staff and students at the same $79.95 price in place of Office Professional 2007 as a back-to-school special.

This special deal is being made by Microsoft to schools participating in the Microsoft Student Licensing Program as a back-to-school special. Office Enterprise 2007 is considered a step up from Office Professional 2007.

Office Professional 2007 includes Word 2007, Excel 2007, PowerPoint 2007, Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager, Publisher 2007, and Access 2007.  Office Enterprise 2007 adds OneNote 2007, Groove 2007, and InfoPath 2007. Microsoft Word 2003-to-2007 training Friday, Aug. 14

The first round of training sessions on “Transitioning from Word 2003 to Word 2007” are being offered by the Information Technology Assistance Center (iTAC) and have been scheduled Friday, Aug. 14, in Hale 401 at the following times:

  • 9 a.m.
  • 10:30 a.m.
  • 1:30 p.m.

These sessions are open to all K-State faculty/staff and students. Each session will last an hour and will focus on interface and usability differences and “Where do I find..?” questions.

Licenses still available for Microsoft Office online training

There are still plenty of licenses available for the Microsoft Office online training purchased by Information Technology Services earlier this year. The tutorials are free for all K-State faculty and staff, but registration is required for access, so a license can be assigned to each user. Visio 2007: Save Visio files as PDF or XPS

Microsoft Visio drawings (.vsd) can output in a variety of formats: .JPG, XML templates, webpages, AutoCAD drawings, and others. Now, with a simple Microsoft add-in, Visio images can be saved as PDF or XPS files, too. These file types make Visio drawings viewable by those who don’t use Microsoft Office.

PDF (Portable Document Format) is a fixed-layout electronic file format. XPS (XML Paper Specification) also preserves the file formatting and enables file sharing.

Microsoft Word 2007 tools for referencing sources

Ever have challenges with citing references, both in-text and in the bibliographical list that follows? Microsoft Word 2007 offers a references tool that may make this task easier. The References Tab on the MS Word 2007 Ribbon offers many options for working with references in a document.

The Table of Contents feature allows the automated building and updating of these contents, which comes in handy for larger documents.

Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 tip: eye-catching themes and customizable designs

Microsoft Office’s PowerPoint 2007 has enlivened the look and feel of its range of designs with some new features.  The new MS Office Ribbon below shows some of the slide designs with pre-set color palettes and font mixes.  Scroll down the list using the arrow keys to the right of the theme designs.

Microsoft Word 2007: How to display/hide formatting codes?

Word is displaying all formatting codes as I type. Whenever I add a space, press Enter, and so on, Word puts a formatting code in my document view. How do I turn this off?

On the Home tab, in the paragraph section, click the Hide/Show button to turn formatting off and on. When the Hide/Show button is highlighted as shown below, the formatting feature is turned on.

PowerPoint 2007: Using information rights management to protect slide shows

Information rights management (IRM) is available in Microsoft Office 2007. This feature allows you to control access to your documents, workbooks, and slide shows. According to Microsoft Help, “this helps prevent sensitive information from being printed, forwarded, or copied by unauthorized people.” You can also set a file expiration date so content can’t be viewed after the specified date. Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 tip: The PowerPoint “Ribbon”

In place of the former menu bar, PowerPoint 2007 features a “ribbon” of tools above the workspace for the slideshow. The “ribbon” consists of the typical high-level tabs: Home, Insert, Design, Animations, Slide Show, Review, View, and Add-Ins.
