April 16 registration deadline for free Twitter class

The registration deadline for the free, online course on “Getting Started with Twitter” is Monday, April 16. This four-week course begins Tuesday, April 17, and is designed to introduce K-Staters to the fundamental concepts and uses of Twitter.

Each week, participants will be required to do the readings and exercises assigned. Assignments can be done at the participant’s convenience, but must be completed prior to the start of the next week’s assignments. You can expect to spend 1-2 hours a week on the course. Questions about the course can be sent to Cathy Rodriguez (cathyr@k-state.edu).

iTAC offers free Twitter class

March 9 (today) registration deadline for 2012 technology showcase

Today, March 9, is the last day for K-State faculty/staff to register for the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Showcase 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, in the K-State Student Union Ballroom. Come and join the event, and stay for a light lunch. Prize drawings will be held throughout the showcase.

Registration for the event is required. If you haven’t previously registered for an event through the Division of Continuing Education, you must create an account using your email address and setting a password (NOT your eID password).

What’s at the showcase

  1. 25+ faculty demonstrations of technology, tools, tips, and resources
  2. Three mini-presentations: developing mobile apps; music and technology in the classroom; and advancing public knowledge of traumatic brain injury
  3. Nine vendors with technology products and demos
  4. Free lunch
  5. Prize drawings for two 26″ LCD TVs, a Steelcase Node Chair, a Dell 22-inch widescreen monitor, printers, Adobe Creative Suite Software, a Kindle Touch, and more

Free Adobe seminar March 12 for faculty/staff

As part of the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Showcase scheduled in March, Adobe representatives will provide a complimentary training seminar the afternoon of Monday, March 12. This event has been moved to the day before the showcase in order to provide a larger timeslot for the Adobe presentations.

Topics being considered include:

  • Acrobat
  • ePublication and Digital Publishing with Adobe InDesign
  • Mobile content delivery
  • What’s new in Creative Suite 5.5

Do you need a place where you can discuss projects you are working on?  Join this session to learn how Yammer, a free private social network, can help you.  All you need to get started is an @ksu.edu email address. The online 2-week class, sponsored by the Information Technology Assistance Center, begins Monday, Feb. 27.

Register now for free, online Web design training; starts Feb. 13

Registration is now open for the free, online Web design training class being offered by the Information Technology Assistance Center this spring. The 12-week class begins Monday, Feb. 13, and is designed to introduce K-Staters to the fundamental concepts, terminology, and best practices of Web design.

The class is free and open to all current K-State employees and students.  It requires preregistration and purchasing the book Learning Web Design: A Beginner’s Guide to (X)HTML, Style Sheets, and Web Graphics, 3rd edition, by Jennifer Niederst Robbins.

Free class Dec. 2: Using a professional-grade camcorder

K-State faculty/staff and students who would like to learn the basics of using a professional-grade camcorder are invited to attend a free class 9-10 a.m Friday, Dec. 2, in the Media Development Center, 213 Hale Library.  No registration is needed; just walk in the day of the class.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Set the white balance
  • Choose the correct camera mode
  • Use the zoom, iris, and focal controls
  • Check and adjust audio levels
  • Use good techniques for shooting video

Online EDUCAUSE Conference videostreams start today in Hale Library

For K-Staters not able to travel to Philadelphia, here’s the next best opportunity to attend the online EDUCAUSE Conference scheduled this Wednesday-Friday, Oct. 19-21. All K-Staters are welcome to attend the free, live-streamed sessions as time allows (length of sessions vary). No registration is needed. About 20 seats are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Information Technology Assistance Center is offering a free, online course on “Connecting with Social Media.” This eight-week course is designed to introduce K-Staters to the fundamental concepts and uses of various social media tools. The course begins Tuesday, Sept. 20, and requires pre-registration.

The course will cover:

  • Blogs
  • Personal start pages
  • RSS feeds
  • Wikis
  • Twitter
  • Video sharing
  • Social bookmarking
  • Social networking

This online course will require approximately three hours a week in order to complete the required, assigned readings and exercises. As long as assignments are completed prior to the following Tuesday, students can work on the class at their convenience. Questions about the course can be sent to Cathy Rodriguez.

Register now for free, online Web Design training

Registration is now open for the free, online Web Design training class being offered by the Information Technology Assistance Center this fall. The 12-week class begins Monday, Sept. 12, and is designed to introduce K-Staters to the fundamental concepts, terminology, and best practices of web design. The class is free; open to all current K-State employees and students; and requires pre-registration.

The class will be conducted online via K-State Online and will cover:

  • HTML markup for structuring webpages
  • Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for presentation in webpages
  • An overview of Adobe Dreamweaver Creative Suite 5.5

Each week, class members will be required to read articles and book chapters, view videos, and then complete and submit assigned exercises. The class will require purchasing a textbook and signing up for a free Dropbox account. Questions about the course can be sent to Sarah Silva (gr8ful@k-state.edu).
