HAGCSA – Scholarship Opportunities for Students

It’s getting close to that time of year again – to start promoting available scholarship opportunities through the Heart of America GCSA.  Please help spread the word to your students (when school starts in August).  Deadline is October 31, 2016.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY – 2016

The Heart of America GCSA Scholarship Program offers educational aid to deserving students in the turfgrass program at an accredited college or university in Kansas or Missouri.

A total up to $5,000 is allocated each year to deserving students. Applicants will compete based on their overall qualifications determined by the Scholarship and Research Committee.

Applicants:
2016 academic term

(Must carry a 2.75GPA or higher for consideration.)

KGCSA Scholarship and Research Tournament – Sign up today!

Print aspect ratio: 0.65KGCSA Scholarship & Research Tournament will be held Tuesday, June 14 at Firekeeper Golf Course.  The 240-acre course is located across the street from the Prairie Band Casino & Resort, just 15 minutes north of Topeka.   The tournament fills up quickly and is on a first-come basis.  

Attached is the team entry form.   It is filling up quickly!

If you have anything to donate to the Live Auction, please indicate on the entry form or let me know.   You can donate equipment, autographed memorabilia, golf clubs, rounds of golf, electronics, product, gift certificates, etc. — you name it!

The Sponsorship Opportunity form is also attached.  This is our largest event of the year and it is a great opportunity to have your company’s name honored and recognized by our membership for your support of this well-attended event.

Update on KSU Turfgrass Program and Facilities in Manhattan and Olathe

As you turfgrass managers know it has not been a slow winter.  It was hot, it was cold, it snowed, it was warm again, winter was late and it looks like spring has come a little early.  With winters like that it keeps turfgrass managers busy.

This winter the KSU Turfgrass Team has also been busy.  New river pumps were installed at Rocky Ford Turfgrass Research Facility, new research plots are being installed, plans for new irrigation are in the works in Manhattan and Olathe, and believe it or not we finally have concrete in the turfgrass shop floor in Olathe.  Moving’ on up!

On behalf of the turfgrass team, we would like to thank the Heart of America and Kansas Golf Course Superintendents Associations for the donation of the concrete floor in Olathe, Martin Lane from Midwest Laser Leveling for donating time and equipment to prepare new research plots at Rocky Ford, Kevin Marks from SiteOne Landscape Supply for the new research plot irrigation design, and everyone involved in the new river pump installation at Rocky Ford.  Below are a list of pictures from all these events.

Kurt Sexton will be talking about soil sampling and the appropriate methods and I will be presenting on how to prepare your turfgrass for 2016.  Following the presentations we will have a question and answer session, so bring your questions!

A big congratulations to Dave Fearis for GCSAA award

Congratulations to Dave Fearis on being named one of the recipients of the Col. John Morley Distinguished Service Award from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America.

Dave was the superintendent of Blue Hills Country Club in Kansas City for many years. He has been a leader in the profession, serving locally, regionally, and nationally. Dave has been active in the Heart of America Golf Course Superintendents’ Association and First Tee of Kansas City. At the national level, he served as GCSAA President and he also worked several years as the Director of Membership, where he emphasized professional development for both superintendents and assistant superintendents.

Kansas State Student Chapter GCSAA Yard Cleanup Drive

We are writing this letter to inform everyone that the Kansas State Student Chapter Golf Course Superintendents of America Association is offering yard cleanup to anyone interested. We will be offering winter cleanup and hauling away any debris you would like us too. We are doing this as a fundraiser to help us get to San Diego in February to attend the national Golf Course Industry show. Going to this trade show is more than just seeing all of the new things coming out in the industry, it is a great way to network for potential internships and employment after graduation. We will also be competing with schools from across the country at the Collegiate Turf bowl, which is hosted by John Deere every year. Our goals are to represent Kansas State University in the best manner possible and any help we can get is appreciated. We will be asking for donations for this cause, the recommended donation is $50. We are also offering yard painting for the winter if you would like to keep that lush green color, the recommended donation for that is also $50. The donations can be written in a check to the Kansas State Student Chapter GCSAA, or cash is always accepted. We will provide you with a receipt for the transaction. KSU Turfgrass Graduate Student, Ross Braun, Receives Awards

Ross Braun, Ph.D. student in Turfgrass Science has been selected as a recipient of the 2015 Chris Stiegler Turfgrass Science Student Travel Award.  His application was one of the top 6 out mainly highly qualified applicants. The award check for $1,000 will be presented to him during the Division C-5 Turfgrass Science Business Meeting, which is on Wednesday, November 18, 10:00 am in Room 101DE in the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Ross Braun, Ph.D. student in Turfgrass Science won second place among 190 entries in the Agronomy, Crop, Soil Science Society of America Annual Meeting Photo Contest. His photo, along with 11 others, will be part of the photo contest display at the November 15-18 Annual Meeting (https://www.acsmeetings.org/) near Society Center in the Exhibit Hall in Minneapolis, MN. The winners and honorable mentions will be part of a looping PowerPoint during Exhibit Hall hours. It will also be on the three Societies’ web sites at the end of this year.

Reports of fall armyworms are coming in!

I have just received my first report of Fall Armyworms this year.  Last year we experienced a couple areas that had some damage but wasn’t very wide spread.  So to keep us prepared the link below goes to information about armyworm control that I put together last year.

Keep a look out for fall armyworms.  A couple of reports have been around the Derby, KS area and have already caused some damage to tall fescue turf. These armyworms were already 1 to 1.5″ long.
