On April 27, an update to Zoom was released with enhanced video communications security. Beginning May 30, Zoom will be enabling GCM encryption across the Zoom platform to provide increased protection for meeting data.
The update can be installed from your desktop client or from the Zoom Downlaod Center. Follow the instructions below to install the update from your desktop client:
- Open Zoom and sign in.
- In the upper-right corner, click your profile.
- Click Check for Updates.
- On the Update Available window, click Update and then click Install.
- Follow the installation instructions and click Close when finished.
Depending on how Zoom was installed on your computer, there might be some nuances associated with the update. If you receive an error message, please check with your technical support staff.
What happens If you don’t install the update?
After May 30, those who haven’t updated Zoom will receive a forced upgrade or won’t be able to join any Zoom meetings.
Changes to existing features
- Prevent private chatting outside of Zoom account or organization – you won’t be able to privately chat with other members of the same channel if they are not on the same Zoom account or organization.
- Embed password in meeting link for one-click join is disabled – if you have this feature disabled in the Zoom web portal, the Zoom client will no longer include the password in the URL when inviting new participants.
Enhanced security features
- Report a User – you can report users to Zoom and they will review any potential misuse and take appropriate action.
- Enable Waiting Room – you can turn on Waiting Rooms while your meeting is in progress.
- Lock Meeting – you can lock your meeting after everyone has joined.
- Remove Participants – you can remove a participant and they won’t be able to rejoin the meeting.
