Rocket.Chat will be retired Aug. 31

K-State will retire Rocket.Chat, a web chat service on Aug. 31. Rocket.Chat used by IT staff will be replaced with MicrosoftTeams. Since MicrosoftTeams has a chat feature that has been widely adopted across campus, it was time to standardize on one chat platform, reduce support overhead from multiple chat services, and save money.

On Aug. 17, the channels in Rocket.Chat will be transitioned into a read-only mode and no longer used for messaging. Individuals who want to archive information from those channels will be able to retrieve information until Aug. 31. The read-only channels include:

  • #general
  • #network
  • #noc
  • #security

The channels in Rocket Chat listed above will become official channels within Microsoft Teams. IT staff using these channels will open the Microsoft Teams application or website and search for the team K-State IT and join the team. This new team will be available for preview on Aug. 1.

Rocket.Chat will become non-operational on Aug. 31 and can be uninstalled. No messages will be preserved in Rocket.Chat after Aug. 31. More information will be available on the Office 365 website https://www.k-state.edu/its/office365/ under the Microsoft Teams heading. IT staff are working on a tutorial to provide additional details on the chat feature.
