Spotlight: Temple Grandin, Ken Robinson videos available online

Videos are now available online from two recent presentations at K-State by world-famous authors.

Temple Grandin’s “Animals and Autism” presentation Tuesday evening, Nov. 9, was delivered to an estimated 1,400 people who overflowed both Forum Hall and the Union Ballroom, not to mention reportedly thousands of online attendees.  The presentation is posted in two videos on the blog site of Food for Thought, the student group that sponsored the talk.

iSIS upgrade scheduled during fall break

K-State’s student information system (iSIS), will be undergoing an upgrade during the week of fall break. As a result, iSIS will not be available from 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, through Wednesday, Nov. 24. The upgrade will provide improved features requested by faculty, staff and students, keep all components up to date for federal regulatory purposes, and update the system to the latest version.

“Finding your passion” author presentation Sept. 30

Sir Ken Robinson, bestselling author and professor emeritus of Warwick University in the U.K., will present “The Element: How finding your passion changes everything” 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, in McCain Auditorium. This event is open to all K-Staters. Free tickets can be obtained at the McCain Box Office and also during noon hours in the K-State Student Union’s ticket office near the Little Theatre.

According to the event webpage, “Sharing the personal stories of well-known high achievers, Sir Ken illustrates how ‘finding our passion’ helps us to meet the challenges of succeeding in the 21st century.” This event is sponsored by the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning.

Mathematica 7 open training seminar Sept. 14

To support the Mathematica site license at Kansas State University, Wolfram Research will be on campus Tuesday, Sept. 14, to provide training for Mathematica 7. This training session will be 12:30-1:30 p.m. in 401 Hale Library, and there will be time after the training session to answer technical and licensing questions about Mathematica.

Mathematica is often thought of as useful for only math, but this training session will illustrate why Version 7 changes the pedagogy of teaching within biology, chemistry, economics, physics, engineering, and a number of other academic departments. Registration open for K-State Online conference Sept. 29-30

Registration for the fifth annual Axio Learning/K-State Online Conference is now open. Come join us Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 29-30 at the K-State Alumni Center in Manhattan, Kan. The conference will focus on:

  • The future of online education
  • Innovative distance learning methods
  • K-State Online/Axio Learning

Digital signage demo Wednesday, June 30

A live, digital signage demonstration by Janus Displays will be 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, in Hale 401. All interested individuals are welcome.

Spotlight: Consumer Electronics Show 2010

It’s that time of year again! The annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is being held Jan. 7-10. CES is known for giving the Tech World a preview of the newest and most cutting-edge electronics being prepared for consumers by hundreds of different companies. CES attracts more than 140,000 attendees. Many companies choose this venue to make big announcements, such as the unveiling of the Palm Pre, and Bill Gates announcing his retirement.

Watch this week’s inaugural events LIVE on K-State TV

Kansas State University’s new president, Kirk H. Schulz, will be officially inaugurated this week, and President Schulz will also give his first State of the University Address that will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Watch these events live on K-State TV, or catch the encore airings.

  • 13th Presidential Inauguration Ceremony, live at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24. Encore airing at 8 p.m.
  • State of the University Address, live at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25. Encore airings at 10:30 p.m. that day; plus 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26

No TechBytes program this week

There will not be a TechBytes program this week. The series will resume Thursday, Oct. 1, with “What’s Twitter?”

TechBytes seminars are free and open to the K-State community. The series is also video-streamed live for off-campus viewers and others who wish to view it from their desktop. Use the “View live video” link on the TechBytes homepage to watch the next live video as it’s being recorded.

IT security training event Oct. 5

Registration is now open for the October IT Security Training Event 8:30 a.m.-3:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, in the K-State Student Union. This free, full-day event is open to K-State faculty/staff and students, as well as IT professionals from other Regents’ institutions.

Like past events, this year’s training will include general sessions covering topics relevant to everyone, plus breakout sessions for more-technical and less-technical audiences. Topics include:
