Upgrades in MDC include 64-bit systems, Windows 7

In mid-January, all 18 PCs and 6 Macs in the Media Development Center (213 Hale Library) were upgraded from 32-bit systems to 64-bit systems. As a result, K-Staters will see significant improvements in processing speed, not to mention the other software upgrades made at the same time.

PCs in the center were updated to the Windows 7 operating system, Microsoft Office Suite 2010, and Adobe Creative Software Suite 5. The 64-bit systems also allow PC users to take advantage of new features in Windows 7.

Student demand for MDC technology goes up at semester’s end

The Media Development Center in 213 Hale Library experiences a spike in demand as the end of semester nears, with few empty seats in sight and students crowding around large-screen monitors working on group projects.

MDC hours during 2010 fall break and finals week

The Media Development Center in 213 Hale Library will have extended hours of 10 a.m.-midnight on Mondays through Thursdays of Nov.29-Dec. 9, or two weeks prior to finals week. The complete schedule of MDC hours now through Dec. 18 is shown below.

Spotlight: New 46-inch monitors in Media Development Center

New to the Media Development Center (MDC) are two 46-inch Panasonic screens added to the video-editing area. One is connected to a PC, and one to a Mac.

This large-format screen will greatly benefit:

  • Groups working on multimedia projects
  • Users with vision challenges
  • Projects that require working across multiple computer windows

Media Development Center open again; summer hours

After two weeks closure for maintenance, the Media Development Center (in 213 Hale Library) opened again today, June 1. The center’s modified schedule for the summer session:

  • Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • Saturday 1-5 p.m.
  • Sunday CLOSED

This schedule will remain in effect until fall classes start Monday, Aug. 23.

Media Development Center end-of-semester expanded hours

The Media Development Center, in Room 213 Hale Library, started extended hours Sunday, April 25, for end-of-semester access by students, faculty, and staff. The table below shows the MDC schedule April 26 through May 31. Note these:

  1. The MDC is now open until midnight through Thursday, May 6.
  2. The last day of Spring 2010 classes is Friday, May 7.
  3. Exam week is Saturday, May 8-Thursday, May 13.
  4. The center is closed May 15-31 (Memorial Day) for maintenance and software upgrades.

IT equipment checkout closed; reopens Jan. 4, 2010

Checkout of IT equipment via the IT Help Desk closed Monday, Dec. 21, and will remain closed during the holiday break. The service will resume its 8 a.m.-5 p.m. schedule starting Monday, Jan. 4, 2010.

Relatedly, the Media Development Center (213 Hale Library) has an altered schedule during the December-January winter break. The center is closed Dec. 19-Jan. 10, 2010, and will re-open Monday, Jan. 11, on its regular schedule. See the Dec. 1 article for details.

Media Development Center hours December-January

The Media Development Center (213 Hale Library) has modified its hours to accommodate end-of-semester activities and winter break. The center is normally open until 10 p.m., but Monday-Thursday hours have been extended to midnight this week and next, through Thursday, Dec. 10.

$10 limited free B/W, color printing in labs, InfoCommons, MDC

On Aug. 20, limited free printing in the university computing labs and K-State InfoCommons was reset to $10 for the fall semester. This service is available to all students with an active K-State eID, and is available via printers in those facilities as well as the Media Development Center (Hale 213).

Double-sided (duplex) black-and-white printing is the default in the labs and InfoCommons. Duplex printing costs 18 cents, and single pages are 10 cents.

This summer, all computers in the InfoCommons were updated to provide access to color printing, through the color printer in the Media Development Center. Color prints cost 75 cents per page for 8.5″ X 11″ or 11″ X 17″ sheets. Continue reading “$10 limited free B/W, color printing in labs, InfoCommons, MDC”
