Remember: Sign up for the FREE April 13 IT Security Training Event

Time is running out to sign up for the April 13 IT Security training event. This year’s event is 8:30 a.m.-4 pm. Wednesday, April 13, in the K-State Student Union and will feature eight break-out sessions. Most sessions will be presented twice. The event is open to all K-State faculty, staff, and students. To attend either the full day or even part of the day, register here.

Note that one of the break-out sessions is the live version of the mandatory “SecureIT@K-State” IT security training.  A separate attendance will be taken at that session in order to ensure that attendees receive credit from Human Resources for completing the annual security-training requirement.

Q/A: Secure FTP software for Macs?

Q. K-State’s central Unix system won’t let me log in via FTP to work on my departmental webpages. It says my Mac’s FTP connection isn’t secure. How do I fix that?

K-State has had secure-FTP sign-in for a long time, and there are several applications available to do that. K-Staters who use Dreamweaver (on Macs or PCs) to maintain departmental webpages can select a secure-FTP checkbox as shown in the image below. Continue reading “Q/A: Secure FTP software for Macs?”

More options now for required IT security training

Types of IT security training available

  • Face-to-face
  • Online audio
  • Online text-only

A new text-only version of K-State’s online IT security training is now available to allow people to move through the material at their own pace. Relevant information from the audio version that is not already displayed has been added to the text-only slides to make sure all the content is covered.  While both versions contain the same general information, the version with audio contains more in-depth discussions of each topic and may be more useful for less technical users.

Take the mandatory training online at secureit.k-state.edu/secureit
(eID/password sign-in is required).

Thus far, more than 1,250 K-State employees have completed the online version of the training, with 767 attending the live, face-to-face version.

State-required IT security training now online for K-Staters

The course is broken into three sections and should take about 45 minutes to complete.  Go to secureit.k-state.edu/secureit now and sign in with your K-State eID to get started.

eID password deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 9 (spring 2011)

Wednesday, Feb. 9, is the last day for all K-Staters to change the passwords on their K-State eIDs for the spring semester. This mandatory password change occurs each fall and spring, and applies to both individual eIDs and group eIDs. After Feb. 9, unchanged passwords will lose access to K-State e-mail, iSIS, K-State Online, the university computing labs, and other IT services.

Last year’s updated password requirements make it easier to select a password by allowing:

  • A phrase with several words and spaces
  • Up to 30 characters (7 minimum)

Remember that K-State will NEVER ask for your password via e-mail. Any e-mail that does so is a scam and should be deleted immediately.

Credit card security seminar to be repeated Feb. 11

Due to popular demand, the IT security roundtable on protecting credit card information will be repeated 9-10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11, in Hale 501. This is a repeat of the seminar given Jan. 14 on the Manhattan campus and Feb. 1 on the Salina campus.

The payment card industry (PCI) has rather strict security requirements for any merchant that accepts credit cards for payment. If your department at K-State accepts credit card payments, then you must comply with these data security standards (DSS), for which version 2.0 was recently published.
