Save the date: All-day security training Oct. 5

Mark your calendar: Monday, Oct. 5, is the date of the fourth K-State Security training event. This time around, K-State’s IT security team and Security Incident Response Team (SIRT) will be joining with members of the Kansas Board of Regents Information Security Council to present a full day of computer security training. The event will be open to K-Staters and to security personnel from other universities throughout the state.

This full-day training will feature sessions by computer security officers from K-State as well as from other Regents universities.

Mark your calendars now so you don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about securing your corner of cyberspace.

Still time to attend K-State Online pre-release training this week

Pre-release training for K-State Online 9.0 will continue Wednesday, June 17, and Thursday, June 18. If you would like to get hands-on time with the new features in a lab setting and give feedback on the new features before they become available mid-July, pre-register to attend either the Wednesday or Thursday session.

Both sessions are in the Hemisphere Room (501) in Hale Library, Manhattan campus.
Wednesday, June 17, 1:30 – 3 p.m.
Thursday, June 18, 9 – 10:30 a.m.

Licenses still available for Microsoft Office online training

There are still plenty of licenses available for the Microsoft Office online training purchased by Information Technology Services earlier this year. The tutorials are free for all K-State faculty and staff, but registration is required for access, so a license can be assigned to each user. K-State Online pre-release training June 15-18

K-State faculty and staff are invited to attend the June 15-18 pre-release training sessions for the K-State Online features coming in mid-July. This is an opportunity to get hands-on time with the new features in a lab setting, gain insight into the coming changes, and give feedback on new features.

All sessions will be in the Hemisphere Room (501) in Hale Library, and pre-registration is required.

CHECK conference May 20-21; registration open

The Kansas CHECK conference for IT professionals and academic staff in higher education is scheduled Wednesday-Thursday, May 20-21, at Wichita State University. Registration is open on the conference website at www.check.gen.ks.us and is $50 per participant.

100+ people attended IT security training event

More than 100 K-State faculty/staff and IT personnel from other Regents institutions gathered in the K-State Union Thursday, April 9, for the annual IT security training event. They heard presentations on topics including how to recognize a scam; how to secure a home computer; advanced forensics; best practices for securing computers on campus; web application security; securely deleting files; effective management of Trend Micro OfficeScan; and protecting Social Security numbers. Presentation materials are now available on the event website.

Larry Kettlewell, the chief IT security officer for the State of Kansas, provided context for IT security governance and policies at the state level in his keynote address, while Harvard Townsend, K-State’s chief information security officer, gave an overview of security threats 2007-2009 at K-State and worldwide, plus what’s on the horizon (and told a lot of really bad jokes).

Register this week for April 9 IT security training

The deadline to register for the April 9 IT security training event sponsored by SIRT is Sunday, April 5. Register this week to reserve your spot and identify the sessions you will attend. The event is free and open to any K-State faculty, staff, or students, as well as IT professionals from other Regents’ institutions. All sessions take place 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 9, in the K-State Student Union.
